I'd love to hear from anyone who's been to Holbox Island. I heard it is the only place in the Caribbean that divers can see whale sharks year round. Is this true?

Is there a bus from Cancun to Holbox Island?

Where is a good place to stay?

What is there to do topside?

Is it safe?

Isla Mujeres is now THE place for whale sharks. About 3-5 years ago they discovered that whale sharks have been congrerating in an area north of Isla Mujeres for the last million years in numbers averaging 100. The Holbox people are at war with the Isla Mujeres operators because the business has shifted to Isla Mujeres, if you ask anybody involved with Holbox they often hold back information or out right lie about any of this.

I heard it is the only place in the Caribbean that divers can see whale sharks year round. Is this true? Nope. Some places claim that, like Utila, but the Dominoes migrate. I think Holbox to Isla Mujeres season is June thru September.

Is there a bus from Cancun to Holbox Island? Take the Ado bus to Chiquila, then ferry over. Well, the Ado site does not show it as a stop, but I can't imagine them dropping it?! We drove, but knew some folks who took the bus. Between ferry trips, you can dicker on the price of a private boat ride - much nicer. We got there after the last ferry one night and paid full price for a private boat, but shared it with others who also paid. If you choose to drive, there are some other warnings - like don't trust Google maps, dodge potholes, fill up your tank often, etc!

Where is a good place to stay? We enjoyed the Dream hotel, but there are many to consider. Only a few have air conditioning, and we used ours in August!

What is there to do topside? Lively town square at night, many nice restaurants, other sight seeing tours, lovely beach, cute Mexican girls, some topless girls on our beach. Pretty quiet mostly.

Is it safe? Very safe when we were there a few years ago. No cars, just golf carts. Delightful village, but like many - probably changing and getting more expensive quickly.
