To me the difference is HOG is a set of gear principles. DIR (and by extension GUE) is a group of concepts that when not followed to the letter will get you called names and yelled at in internet message boards.

I had an ongoing "discussion" with a hard-core DUI guy re: weighting - I knew what worked for me and that was dive to heavy and use a belt - he insisted that his integrated system and neutral bouyancy was the only way to go - we were part of a dive team that worked with other teams - the other teams all used belts and were trained to use belts and dive heavy - everyone wearing the same system so that in an emergency to do a quick release you were not fumbling for unfamiliar weights or other gear - this arguement went on for a long while...this guy got involved in a filmed documentary and as I watched in disbelief, he suited up on camera and the last thing he added was a MASSIVE weight belt...

oh PS - I call it DUI as a joke in case you didn't get that - guy had been diving less than a year - I'd been diving for about 30...

HOG - Gear configuration

DIR - A set of policies and procedures based on a very specific HOG gear configuration.

JeffG has it right.

I would add that the HOG equipment configuration developed from the general needs of North Florida Cavers. The HOG equipment configuration can be used in other diving profiles than that of caves. Indeed, many of the componants of the HOG equipment configuration were derived from earlier dive use outside of caves.

"DIR" is a term that represents a specific set of protcols and equipment configurations that were deveopled for a specific group of North Florida exploration cave divers.

OK, this makes sense, thanks!

Yeah, I've experienced this one also. However I have taken on the attitude that whoever feels the need to call non DIR divers names are themselves not DIR. They are just wannabe's with an attitude.

I would add that DIR evolved with ocean diving clearly in its design, as ocean diving was also a principle interest of the main parties that formed a DIR consensus --- All the cave ideas George would bring back from north Florida to our deep ocean dives in South Florida, had an enormous amount of testing and tuning in the deep ocean environment.....and then when we began discussing DIR for recreational, this was primarily for ocean diving.

Dan
