Hog Regulator Combo or get something better ???

I am another that is west of the Mississippi (at least a vast majority of the time I am) and I use HOG/EDGE. I actually have four reg sets right now and one is straight HOG, one is EDGE 1st stage with HOG second stage's, and the other two I use so little I dont even recall what they are LOL.

I aint no fancy pants technician and so my only criteria for a reg is I put them in my mouth and breathe through them while diving. I have not dove with every brand reg out there but of the half dozen others I have used only one might come close to breathing as easy as my HOG's. I have over 70 dives on my HOG's and they breathe as good now as the first time I went down. I hear NO crack when I breathe and it is smooth as silk. My SAC went way up as soon as I started using them. Not really sure why my SAC went up unless it is because they breathe so smooth I am more relaxed.

If I were you I would spend the money and go with a name brand reg.

Spend the extra money and get the best, then you only pay once.

I've dived other, more expensive brands. HOG is a name brand and I would chose it first. I love my HOG reg!

I am west of the Mississippi in California. Of the 20+ regulators I own, I own 4 HOG single sets and a HOG doubles set up. I have put 6 of my students into HOGs and have become a HOG repair tech and a HOG repair tech instructor.

I'm in AZ.TSandM is in WA. Seems like the west is well represented here for HOG.

I have 4 sets of regs. 2 of them are HOGs. I'm not an expert, but; my HOGs breathe as good as the SP and the Aeris I have.
A buddy I dive with (quite a bit) is strictly a SP and Apeks fella. We do plenty of air share practicing and we can't really tell any difference in the performance between them. I guess the biggest difference was, I got both my HOGs for less than he paid for one of either of his. YMMV

What makes a reg better than the other?

Most reg do breath pretty well today, so performance, I mean breathing effort and comfort isn't really the determine factor especially for recreation use. To me, it comes down to 1) features, 2)compatibilities, 3)quality of construction, 4) attention to details, 5)availbility of local support, 6)availability of self maintanance.

I'm surprised you didn't say, "Deep Down You Want The Best"..... LMAO!

I just realized something interesting. I read over the SP website and nowhere did I see the blatant, outright claim that SP is the best. All I saw was the slogan "Deep Down, You Want the Best." This is not a claim that SP is the best. It''s merely a statement that a diver wants the best equipment and says nothing about SP being able to fulfill that want. This little play on words is, no doubt, meant to convince the prospective buyer that SP is the best without putting the company on the spot by actually claiming it to be fact. I'd bet that lawyers had a hand in crafting that slogan!

I own 10 HOG d1's and I have used them in some very tough unforgiving environments. I wouldn't think twice about buying more of them.

Son has Hog

No difference I can see other than Hog more features for less money. We have not found any difference to 120' and 3C - 4C, and yes, we have breathed each others regs.

Just for fun, I did a 500 mile search from my zip code. I found two ( 2 ) hog dealers.

One in Montana & one in Nebraska.

In Colorado alone we have 9 Scubapro dealers. No hog.

Would you please share your personal experience diving with either the Hog or Edge regulators.

I wouldn't want to think your only objection is that they are not SP.
