I saw mention of the Bertuzzi incident. OK, ask why Claude Lemeiux's name is allowed to be on the cup after Kris Draper spent two months with his jaw wired shut.

QUOTE]

I can feel my blood heating up. There is a double standard here and the league seems to be more concerned with public image than protecting the players.

Lemeiux was suspended for two whole games for that hit. Ooooohh... And he whined about having the right to play in the Stanley cup finals taken away from him. (Note, he did get to play in two games).

I think Bertuzzi's actions were very excessive. If Moore's neck wasn't broken, then Bertuzzi would probably have only gotten one or two games. A very fine line.

Take a look at the Marty McSorley - Brashear incident. A two handed swing to Brashear's head. Brashear was severly injured and McSorley was suspended for a year, (and nobody wanted him afterwards). Similarily, a few games after the Bertuzzi-Moore incident one of the Canucks was high sticked, a two handed swing to the face, with the puck no where around. No call on the play. Not much different except the severity of the injury. There is definitely a problem in the league that is not being addressed.

Bill.

Just to clear this up a bit, McSorley was what, 38 when he came off suspension? I think that his age had as much to do with it as this incident. That said, I tend to agree with those that believe the enforcement of serious penalties is capricious and arbitrary - usually only being forced when an injury is in evidence. That's too bad, but it is still the most exciting sport to watch in person (well, that and curling)...

One other thing to clear up.

Suspensions are handed out by the league, NOT by the referees. You can't blame the ref for who got suspended, and who didn't, or for how long. The league will also review any plays, even where a penalty was not called, if a team asks for it.

dang it... isn't hop-scotch that game they run with a big
pole on their crutch (why?) and then hurl it and it flips
over end and then it lands on the ground?

Dino Cicerelli's comments after shaking Claude Lemieux's hand after the game were absolutely classic!! LOL

Apparently Darren McCarty agreed, LOL. Him and old Claude always seemed to *somewhat dislike* each other after that.

down here in miami we got diving and hockey team that one the championship whats it called the cup something. So I guess we got the best of both worlds.

Hey you can't forget about the Ti Domi sucker punch to Ulf Samuelson when his hands were down and his back was to him. Then there was the incident last year where he beat the **** out of a fan who fell in the box.

Then there was the other talentless Lindros who had a habit of intentionally running down goal tenders (Richter alone at least a few times) with rarely even getting a misconduct for it.

Well said! You're probably right about his age being a big factor. I found it interesting watching McSorley play last fall in the Outdoor Classic between the Edmontona and Montreal old timers. Compared to the other players, McSorley was the one guy on the ice who was really hustling. I wonder if he was trying to show case his talent????

In reference to the next post, as for the referees not handing out suspensions, I know. But I think the referees and Campbell's office should at least be in the vicinity of the same page.

Who would like to see a repeat of the 86 and 89 finals?

Bill
