of dollars.

The government has tried to introduce a dollar coin and it has been unsuccessful. This is my theroy.

The dollar bill should be done away with. The smallest bill should be the 2 dollar bill. With sales tax, everything cost more that a dollar.

The reason why the 2 dollar bill has never caught on is that there is no place in a cash register for it. So do away with the dollar bill. Make a dollar coin that doesn't look like a quarter. Print up a bunch of 2 dollar bills. That's my plan.

(this is probably why I have never been invited to Washington to head up the Treasury Dept.)

Yeah, when our smart Canadian neighbors came out with the dollar coin - The Loony - they made it bronze colored so it wouldn't be confused with the quarter, and they stopped making $1 bills. Those in circulation wore out, and people go used to to the coins.

We finally replaced the silver colored Susan B. that people confused with the quarter, but we haven't discontinued the dollar bill yet. And the idea is not completely popular in Canada, either, but they're living with it.

Many my age will remember that the $2 bill was commonly thought bad luck at one time. This goes back to Depression days of the 30s, when "Hard Luck" people who'd lost everything were given welfare payments in $2 bills. Not many alive today will remember those days, though, most of us first generation babies won't remember the story, and my daughter's generation thinks that $2 bills are cool.

You know where "Pieces of Eight" came from...?
