I sat with a few people last week at the Red Cross relief centre here, and it was heartbreaking. Most looked in shock...and one woman just sat with tears running down her face, silently crying. I had no words. :depressed:

I remember that. And there is nothing you can say. But just being there did and will help.
It will help when they start making lists for the insurance company.
Also, getting them some things that will be theirs again. Just a couple changes of clothes, their own toiletries, means a lot. They have lost much of their identity in losing all the tangible aspects of their lives.
You were good to be there, and they Will remember it for a long time, even if they can't acknowledge it now.

It was a small thing to do. I can't fight fires, but I can be there if people need someone.

That is as important. And in many ways much harder. You are a good person. Keep it up.
