Hi from Toowoon Bay, NSW, Australia,

have been snorkeling about eight times and saw a big blue beautiful groper today with it's green partner along with some smaller adolesents - magnificant. live 7 minutes walk from water - am new to all this but enjoying immensely! Will have many questions as we go along. am a bit nervous still about great whites, hammer heads and bull sharks as there is normally a couple of attacks every year along this coast - maybe more that are unreported. Refuse to be too scared though - liked earlier post about using a metre long 3/4 inch diametre PVC tube to keep em an arm's length but will that really do the trick with a big one or would that be more like a toothpick? There was a another comment about "not swimming like bait"; am a bit of an inland angler and understand why red or shiney bright colours might not be too wise but the way you swim is important - how does bait swim exactly (is it the ol wounded prey thing)? am currently using blue camo wetty... am thinking fate has more to be with becoming a snack or your opinions are welcome on the matter. might experiment to make my own shark prod but not sure that will be all that useful either... am I worrying too much or... have heard of the Wobbygones and to treat them like a snake with respect on land as they are a bit aggressive if you bother them while they are trying to blend into the rocks they are laying on. Any other general tips like that? any really good books or other resources that arn't too expensive?

Also epoxied old pair of lenses into swim goggles so I can see clearly underwater and use vinegar as an anti-fog solution - amazingly effective. Any other pointers (not white ones please - how punny)?

Welcome! Nice having you here. I think you will discover either by research or by experience that sharks normally pose little risk to scuba divers who are respectful and careful. We are not on their menu and they are not indiscriminate about their diet. The vast majority of the rare shark attacks that occur are usually the result of misidentification of the diver as a prey item or was a provoked response to something the diver did. If you are diving in clear water, it is easy for sharks to see that you do NOT look like their normal prey. Most are not too keen on the bubbles from your regulator, either, unless they have been acclimated to them by numerous encounters with previous divers who may have fed them to draw them in closer.

If you are smart, and not looking for trouble, you are not likely to find it.

Best wishes!
