Basically everything midway through Mobile, AL and up is North Alabama :)

I'm so glad that this thread has become educational! As you can see by the map, Birmingham is definitely considered CENTRAL Alabama.

This state is funny in it's definitions in regards to location and where you are from.

s you can tell.... The folks in Birmingham don't consider themselves North Alabama. Most of Birmingham considers themselves the center of the state.. :D (it all revolves around B'ham).

As Mat pointed out, to folks in Mobile, everything above them is "north Alabama". :rofl3:

However,t he folks from the northern and north-central part of the state, consider everthing around Montgomery and below as "LA". that's "Lower Alabama" for those who might as what "LA" is. These same folks consider Mobile as the place you go visit that has the Battleship museum when you go down to Gulf Shores to the beach... :rofl3:

It's sorta like the folks in south Florida kinda forget that they have a panhandle in their state. :D

Thats because the "Florida" panhandle is actually just an extention of LA :D

Welcome Aboard! I'm new to diving as well.

If you're willing to make the drive, you can certainly get warmer temps in the gulf. My last dive was at Navarre Pier in Florida, and the water temp was 80'F (only 17' deep though). Deeper spots (60'-90') have been ranging around 68'F-70'F.

There are some great dive boat ops in the Pensacola and Orange Beach/Gulf Shores areas too. If you're looking into a boat trip, just ask, and I'm sure you will get many good recomendations (possibly a few good folks to join you on the dive).

Be sure to get a dive skin and lycra hood before diving the gulf. The jellies usually blow into town, last a few weeks and are then gone, but they are subject to appear at any time. A skin (or full wetsuit coverage) and a lycra hood will offer good protection, but if the're really bad, you may get a vew stings around your 2nd stage. I carry the hood in my bc, so it's always with me in case the jellies show.

If you are subject to seasickness or motion sickness, be sure to take preventative measures BEFORE boarding the boat. It will make things much easier.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The guys and gals on the board are always happy to give advice, and share their experiences. Just don't ask where the paddlewheeler or shrimp boat wrecks are located ;)
