Hi all,
I just purchased a new Avid, the 04 model. I was checking it out and noticed that when I orally inflate the jacket air comes out of the valve on the top of the inflator hose. Is this normal? I checked my other bc and this does not happen. Any ideas??? Don't wanna ship this thing back unless I have to. Thanks for the info. (If you have one at home can you inflate yours and check for any air leaks?:)

I posted this in the BCD section but haven't gotten any responses...hoping to get better luck here.

I have this same B.C. and I love it....check to make sure the threads weren't cross threaded at the top of the inflation hose. Just make sure there is a good seal and it's tight and everything is in place where it should be. Sometimes even equipment right off the shelf has to be tweaked a little.

I have the 05 and really like it. I agree it probably just needs a tweak, may even just be debris. Orally inflate it fully then tug the hose to trip the falve, it may expell a spc of something. I've had stuff prop a valve open after flushing but it self clears if you just exercise it.

It it's actually right at the hose junction check the connection. I think there's a tie wrap there but it's too late to go look in the basement.

The small upgrades to this B.C. make it look nicer that the previous model, I wish I had bought the 05, but it was a tad more than I was willing to pay at the time. Hope you are enjoying it....;)

Good luck fixing that leak SodaKing...

I have an Avid the '03 model and it doesn't do that at all...is the valve screwed in properly?

We sell Sherwood Avid's and have never had issues with them. However they are awesome with service. I'd recommend taking it back to your Dive Shop and having them replace it or repair it. Hey they are all divers and understand the value of a few pounds of air...........Happy breathing!

This shouldn't happen normally , you can try to unsscrew the valve at the top and check to see if the rubber flab that should prevent the air from going out is damaged or folded. The other possibility is since this is a pull dump valve that its stuck in the open position, some grease would then help check if the cord is not too short...
If its not one of theese regular problems, you basically need/should demand a new dump valve....maybe you can get the hsop you purchased it fom to send new just a new dump valve....

JUst thought of something make sure you are not pulling on the inflator hose while you are filling your BC.... that would caucse that problem as wel.... :)

I want to clarify where the air is leaking out. The hose that is connected to the power inflator button...at the top of that large hose - this seems to be where the air is leaking out. It is not leaking from the manual string-pulled dump valves.

You probably have a bad hose connection. They're usually held on with a couple of black zip-ties. Look for one of three causes:

1. Zip ties too loose, cut them off and replace.

2. Zip ties too tight - they can crimp the rubber hose. Cut off and check that the rubber hose isn't damaged, then replace.

3. Crack or mold strike in the inflator/dump elbow where the hose is slipped onto it. This should be smooth all the way around, if there's a crack or a little ridge of plastic left from the molding process, either take it for replacement or shave it down.
