First week in July, wife and I plan to fly into FLL for 4-5 days of wrecks and reefs off of Pompano and Deerfield. We've never dove this area and need some advice on lodging and dive ops. Don't want to rent a car because we aren't familiar with parking availability, so the ideal situation is to have a room close to the dive op so we could walk to the boat, or stay somewhere so the dive op could swing by and pick us up in the boat. Does anything like this exist? No need for fancy room since we plan to spend most of our time in and under the water, just somewhere to shower and sleep well in a clean environment. Think rooms are already full for July 4th week? Thanks for some wisdom.

Try South Florida Hotel: Sands Harbor Resort and Marina: Pompano Beach Intracoastal Waterfront Hotel
They are located in Pompano Beach.
They have nice rooms and there are 3 boats with in walking distance of the hotel. (Say a block)All 3 boats and the shops are together.I could not swear to it but I think there may be a dive stay type of deal at one of the shops.

After you look at the resort, click on marina for links to the dive shops. There is a 3rd not listed and that is Scubatyme. .:: SCUBATYME ::.

Good Luck

If you would like to stay near shore diving this is a nice place in Lauderdale By the Sea
Fort Lauderdale Florida (FL) Hotels - A Little Inn by the Sea

If you would like a good boat American Dream has nice rates as well as a fun crew and they board out of a Hyatt (don't know how cheap that will be) but you would just walk out your door and down to the boat ;)
Fort Lauderdale Hotels & Florida Luxury Resorts - Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six
ScubaFortLauderdale.com - Home of the American Dream II

I'd suggest renting the car, they usually aren't that expensive because the rental market is competitive and parking simply isn't an issue.

A good Pompano boat with the best rates is Parrot Island Scuba.
If you want something smaller (not as many divers onboard), check out Avid Diver Charters and Miss Conduct Charters. These are both six pack boats and while a little more money, I think they offer a better experience.

Lodging for all three: Holiday Park Hotel

I second the Sands Harbor Hotel in Pompano Beach. I just had my AOW certification there last weekend. Great hotel and its about a block's walk to get to the docks. The dive charters have been great every time ive dove with them.

This sounds like solid advice. Both South Florida Diving Headquarters and Scubatyme have boats within the marina where the Sands Harbor Hotel is located, and for the record, I'd say it's closer than one block! I've seen many people come into town to dive and stay there, and assuming they were not exptecting any great luxury, they've all been pretty happy!

BTW, Scubatyme (www.scubatyme.com) is an awesome boat to dive with. If you call them, the owners name is Enzo and he will help you out with whatever you need and will even have tanks waiting for you on the boat, it that's what you need.

Good luck to you!

Well, the dive ops were all good recommendations, but the Holiday Park Hotel?????? It's great if you're visiting the Publix distribution complex, the UPS distribution facility, the smallest Home Depot in the chain, or the newly-reopened CompUSA.
Pay a little more and stay over on the beach part of Deerfield Beach. There are a lot of places ranging from mom-and-pop motels to the Embassy Suites. Do a little digging and mapping and you'll find a good fit.
Oh, I forgot...the Holiday Park Hotel is great if you want to visit the Deerfield Beach Amtrak station, the north Broward county courthouse, and top your visit off by crossing the street to look at the trucks in the Budweiser distribution center and finally a stop off at Dolphin Carpet & Tile.
Why bother diving with all those attractions?

Thanks for all the good pointers. I know I can always count on fellow SBs to give a helping hand. I think I can get something lined up now with all this good info. Feel free to keep adding stuff. Good, timely references can help others too.
