Help - vacation - where to go w. a friend?

What's a good place to go right now for two friends - our girls can not go and we need to use up those vacation days

We are in our late 20s (from currently cold NYC)

I would love to get certified while on this vacation... but can not spend a fortune...

Please advise...

Cozumel is probably a good bet especially from NYC.

How about Bonaire? Shore diving is very affordable...

Or Curacao, good shore diving and a little easier to get to than Bonaire.
The Florida Keys are also a good choice, esp if you don't have passports. Lots of easy diving and plenty of good instructors to choose from. If you travel mid week, sometimes you can find cheap flights.
