I have just bought a pony cylinder, and was wondering if i could use cam bands to strap them to my main cylinder? Either that or im side-slinging it.

There are various brackets designed to use cam bands to secure a pony to a primary tank. The "pony tamer", "Quick Draw" and "X-Bracket" are examples. They tend to go for $80-$130.

Back in the day some one made a simple generic SS bracket that you secured to the pony with hose clamps and threaded a single cam band through the bracket. It was simple and secure with a total cost around $20. XS Scuba currently sells something similar but a lot more complex and higher profile - and they want about $100 for it. They also sell something similar but lower tech with a strap on both pony and tank. It's less secure/wobbles more but it only costs about $35.

There are also bags for pony bottles. They wobble and are not really suited to anything larger than a 13, but they are only $10-$15.

If you have suitable D-rings, slinging your pony has many more advantages.

yeah the brackets are ok if you have your own main cylinders, but i hire mine. i thought about a bag but figured bands were probs more secure. I will prbs just sling it, sounds like the best choice

Quick & Dirty: Check marine supplies for stainless steel plumber’s tape — basically thin stainless about ½” wide with holes punched about every inch. You can form an “8” around the two cylinders and join ends with a nut and bolt between the cylinders. Put vinyl tubing around the bolt where cylinders make contact or you want more space.

You can also find plumber’s tape in plastic, steel, and copper in most hardware stores.

Relatively Fast Acting: You can get an aluminum X-Bracket for $40 from Piranha. It comes with two stainless clamps for the pony but you can use a cam band for faster removal.
