Hello to everyone out there. Working in Iraq you tend to to want to try new things and travel to places you never thought you would ever go. My new adventure is SCUBA diving. I have decided that instead of thinking about I am going to do it. I am an information junkie and before I take to my adventure I am wanting to just get as much information from the SUBA community as I can. I will be going to Fiji in November and I have already signed up for a PADI Open Water Certification. The resort that I am staying at (and I have this on very good authority) is the best for this kind of thing. So is there anyone out there that as some advice for this newbie? Would love to hear from you!!!!!!

Just be prepared to become addicted. You'll find a ton of good info here on the board. As far as advice is concerned I would just encourage you to learn as much as you can, while taking your time, listen to your instructors, and dive safe :)

Fiji is great, you are going to love it, although it may spoil you for the future :)

Yeah, certifying in Fiji will ruin you for US diving, but enjoy it. Check out our New Divers forum, and PM me if I can help you find your way around here....

Be safe while you are there and enjoy your new found passion once you get to Fiji. Diving there is pretty fantastic (although nothing like diving soCal's cold kelp forests... yeah, right).

I would only suggest getting the class materials beforehand and read and uderstand all the chapters and do the study exercises at the end of the chapter. It will then be a breeze the second time around on location. You really won't have much time or inclination for studying if you are going to Fiji. A resort course can be OK as long as you do the academic part (which is usually what is neglected neglected in that style of course).

Hello and thank you to everyone who has responded to my questions. I am finding that this site is full of helpful information!
