Hi! I am getting certified in August and am so excited. I have been wanting to do this for years, and am finally making some time.

I need to get some equipment and was wondering if anyone knew of some places to get mask and fins and stuff used/cheap.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice!!

Welcome to Scuba Board

I'd recommend getting your mask at your local diveshop. To ensure that it fits correctly and doesn't leak. A good place in your area is Charleston Scuba. http://www.charlestonscuba.com/

Fins you can probably get on eBay. Boots too, but they're pretty inexpensive even at a regular divestore. Scubatoys.com is a a good place to get other items with a full mfr's warranty. www.scubatoys.com

Nice thing about diving in your area is the water is warm. Even farther out when you do more advanced dives later due to the Gulf Stream.

Congratulations on taking the first steps toward an incredible life adventure!
Life's crazy, live it!

I'd definitely start out with your mask at your LDS to make sure it fits properly, or work with someone who's been doing it a long time, don't get it from ebay or somewhere like that where you have no guidance. Proper sealing is very important. You can get snorkel, boots and fins relatively cheaply (we sell boots for as low as $16.94), I'm not too sure I'd get them from ebay used, if you can get them for $17 new. You don't have to go to the top of the line equipment starting out, you just need to make sure you're getting fit properly. We've been fitting people over 21 years, and we've found that is the most important thing when getting your gear.
If you ever need any advice or help, we're here for you.

Thanks for all the helpful info! After looking around I've decided to support my local LDS for the basics. I am not ready to buy all the equipment yet.

Getting pretty excited and appreciate everyone taking their time to post as you probably see simliar threads all day!
