Hi all

I've just been initiated into the joys of diving at Sharm el Sheikh-my first time ever :07: :07: :07: . I've got severe withdrawal symptoms now because I only booked a week... :-( and I can't think of anything else except diving now!!! Slight snag is having grown up in a warm country (Italy - I'm English in theory but my body's thermostat believes it is Italian ;-) ) and learnt in an even warmer country (Egypt) I'm at a loss what to do now. I am convinced that diving in UK is only for really hard mad people that eat nails for breakfast and lie about getting hypothermia and about all their friends that died because they had no visibility and couldn't find the way up again. Or froze whilst looking for the way up. Am I right? Can a wimpette like me survive the UK? Or had I better wait until I have hols and ££ for a long weekend somewhere warmer, and if so where is my nearest best bet? And can anyone recommend a GOOD scuba club in London? Any words of wisdom most appreciated!!!

Howdy!

Hi, pumog.
I know just what you mean. It was after a year of diving in the cold and cloudy North Pacific that I finally made it to warm water (the Seychelles) and then the bug really bit me. From what I hear, the Red Sea is equally stunning.
I learned to sail in the Channel but never dove there. You'll probably need a dry suit if you're going to brave those waters. On the other hand, you sound like someone who'd rather spend the money on another trip to warmer climes . . .

Welcome to SB!

Welcome to ScubaBoard!

Try posting in our UK Wreck Ferrets forum. I bet you'll find lots of people that would love to introduce you to some great diving in that area. It's probably not as bad as you imagine.

Don't forget to fill out your profile, so that we can add context to your future posts. Also, once we know where you are geographically, you may find that you'll have a whole bunch of new dive buddies to choose from locally.

Dive safe!

Welcome Aboard!!!

It's addictive, but who cares?!?!?

Good friends and good info. What could be better???

P.S. - If you have not already done so, please fill out your profile.

I've got severe withdrawal symptoms now

We all have that from time to time. lol :eyebrow:

Hello pumog!

The same happens to me when I come back from my hollidays.

I usually dive in Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, with water temperature of 14-16ºCelsius, with a 7 mm wet suit! I´m always cold underwater!!!!!!! But I don´t buy a drysuit because the money I would spent on it allows me to go diving in warmer waters, for example, the red sea.

Believe me if I spent more than 2 weeks without diving I beging to dream about it and I have to go underwater, no matter the conditions - cold and visibility

Welcome to the board....I could help you with diving on this side of the pond.....but I'm a bit challenged over there. We do have additiona forums that can point you in the right direction. Check in the travel section.

Looks like you really have to be a dedicated diver to brave those colld colld waters. but if people keep doing it, there must be something down there.... give it a try once- rent a dry suit.... you should also post on the UK board and see whats up there.

welcome to the site. dive right in!

Hi all

Thanks for your welcomes!! I checked out a local club but wasn't convinced as they want you to buy all your own (yes, all!) and also I saw they were teaching people without their wetsuits on - the Rep in Sharm (who was an instructor) had said about a place that did that there, that it wasn't the right way to do things (ie in terms of learning bouyancy) so i might not go there. My search goes on... I didn't realise there was a UK part to this board, I have to explore more - when I get back from my next holiday (my family in Italy!). I'm actually going to try to arrange some diving over there in Italy - my family lives by Lake Bracciano and I can't imagine there's no diving going on there!!! Otherwise I may just have to tie something onto my back and pretend ;-)) I'll report back when I get back in September! I filled a bit more of the profile. Thanks again
