hi everyone. i did a google search for a scuba dive forum and this was the first one that popped up.

i'm a korean-american from california, but currently am doing research in south korea. first learned to dive at the very southern tip of sumatra, indonesia 4 years ago and never dove for a long time. finally had a chance to do some diving in boracay and just returned from a trip to palau a few days ago. i'm hoping to do some diving in the red sea in a few months as well.

anyhow, just saying hi. hope i can find some good buddies here and learn a lot too!

Welcome to SB kimchicowboy. Know you will enjoy being part of the community.

I have a serious question to ask. I have heard that in Japan female divers outnumber male divers. Is this also true in Korea? I know it sounds frivolous but I sincerely am interested in diver gender ratios in different cultures and reasons for the differences.

drbill, you PM mailbox is full, so i'll just reply here:

hi drbill. regarding your question...

in korea, it appears to be a male-dominated activity. whether on dive or male/female staff member ratios, i always see more korean men than women diving. in my last trip, my group was made up of 5 men and 1 woman. another group that joined us was 4 men and 1 woman.

i did see what appeared to be many japanese women diving on my most recent trip to palau though.

cheers!

Mailbox is so tedious to weed through, but I guess it's time to do it. Wish there were a simpler way to review each PM and decide whether to retain or dump it.

Thanks for taking my serious question seriously and offering your response. Much appreciated. Maybe you ran into a friend of mine who was diving in Palau with her buddy (in September).

I've watched the ratio here in America become more equal over the past 40+ years... something I am most appreciative of since I generally prefer female buddies due to dive characteristics I've described elsewhere on SB. When I see visiting divers from Asia here on Catalina, the groups are almost always dominated by men. Interesting given what I've heard elsewhere, at least for Japan.

Hope your research is not all in cold water!
