I am looking for information on learing how to repair and service my own gear. I am overseas where service centers are few and far between and I am only thinking of my own gear. Is there any good start up books or manuals that you guys can recomend for this. I currrently am using a single hose but have got ahold of a couple of Vintage DH regs also. 1 is from a reputable source and already is ready to dive but I think the othere will be a project for me. I am not currently available to go back to the CONUS for any classes but maybe in the future I could do that

Cheers

Welcome to DIY Micheal.
For books I have 2 modern and 1 vintage suggestions. "Regulator Savvy" from Scubatools and "Maintance and Repair of Scuba Regulators" from Airspeed Press for modern gear and for vintage gear, find a copy of "Basic Scuba" by Fred Roberts. Besides those, any manuals for the particular regs (or type for that matter, a flow by piston is a flow by piston reguardless if its a 60s Healthways or a 2012 Scubapro) are always useful. For modern regs www.frogkick.dk has a good number of manuals and for vintage regs, Vintage Double Hose has a good many manuals on line www.vintagedoublehose.com

The guys here are a great reasource for modern reg DIY and Vintage Double Hose is the place for your DH questions although most of us are on both boards. Fire away with your questions.

Thanks guys for the quick response and I signed up on VDH also. I will hold the questions until Dec 19th when my daughter brings them to me,shipping is poor over here then I am sure I will have some. I purchased one from Bryan at VDH so I am sure he will be a good resource also

Cheers'

I HIGHLY encourage you to read up on diving with double hose regs. They are different beast and unlike modern regs they MUST be properly placed on the body and the correct dive technique used to get them to perform well. They will not kill you but unless you dive them properly, you will be unhappy with the performance. My DH regs are my go to regs, I much prefer them to single hose regs but if you don't treat them well, they will not work well for you. One other item, since (most) DH regs do not have LP or HP ports be prepaired to deal with those issues. Most of us don't dive with a BC so no LP is not an issue but you will some way of monitoring your tank pressure. J valves work but your best option is to get a banjo adapter from Bryan, that said, your reg will require a long yoke -some have them, some don't -and the adapter is the older 3/8s diameter so you will also need either a 3/8 to 7/16 adapter or use the less common 3/8 HP hose.

Like others said buy all books mentioned. Also do a search on this forum. Few locals posted a lot of detailed messages regarding servicing different regs.

What brands and models? You may (or may not) need some special tools and/or parts that you want your daughter to bring along, if shipping is a concern. That's cutting it close, but there's hope.

Thanks guys I have been doing some research and plan on doing a lot more reading prior to diving with them. I am a forum reader who reads all he can about things that interest him. I can always have things shipped here it just takes awhile and they like to lose things . I have a friend who has a shop not to far away and plan on going over to visit him also .

Cheers
Michael
