ok, so check this out. I am at my LDS renting a bc for my night dive tomorrow night with Msilva <plug> when the store manager is asked a question for one of the clerks.

clerk:We have a customer who dropped off a tank for a Visual and upon inspection of the tank boot it was melted, so they called the customer and he said that he had gotten water in the tank and put it on his stove and was trying to dry the water out. He had only heated it up to 50 degrees..... The store manager and clerks jaws dropped, what was this guy thinking? I would not want to be around when that tank got hydroed. hell, he should have tried putting the tank in the microwave next.

its kind of funny, but in all seriousness, total disregard for safety.

Sounds like a potential future winner of the Darwin Award.

I agree 100% I think we should just find out his name and nominate him for the heck of it.

Call it a pre-emptive nomination so they can actually be ready to fully document [perhaps for pay-per-view] darwinism in action...

Did they pass the VIP or not?

Just what is the LDS's options in a case like this?

Im guessing maybe that was supposed to be 500 Degrees?

Ive seen tanks dried with hot (and I do mean hot) air after a hydro. What did this guy do, stick it in the oven? I bet the boot gave off a wonderful burnt plastic smell!

Any time a VIP indicates a tank, especially aluminum, may have been heated beyond limits (a melted boot is a no-brainer) the VIP is failed until a successful hydro is completed.

But what can the shop do to require a hydro other than refuse VIP in that shop? Can the shop cancel a valid hydro? What keeps the owner from cleaning signs from the exterior and taking the tank to the next LDS, other than the good sense he has already demonstrated to lack.

Inquisitive minds want to know. I am a little curious too.

Let's clarify what you mean by "valid hydro." If the tank has just come back to the shop from hydro and has passed, then what's to cancel? The tank's good. If you mean a tank that's "in hydro" (less than five years ago), then evidence of overheating (or anything else that causes the tank to fail VIP) requires a new hydro before the tank is put back in service. In other words, a hydro is good for five years or until something happens to the tank to void it - the shop can "cancel" a hydro because it isn't "valid" if the tank fails a visual inspection.

After the staff and I were done laughing at this guy, I do believe it was decided upon to fail the VIP which left the Hydro the only option.
