My wife and I had been going to Cozumel annually for several years for fishing and an annual family gathering before we got our OW certs and started diving. I got tired of people seeing my Coz shirts and asking how the diving was and their incredulity when I replied that I didn't dive.
So my wife and I decided to get certified. Actually, I decided to get certed and she decided she would rather dive with me than wait on shore to see if I returned. We waited until almost too late to get our certs before a planned trip; our schedules did not match up so we had to get certed by different agencies and trained separately, although our checkout dives were in the same water: Lake Travis, which is sort of a mudhole. My training went very well, but she came away unsure if diving was going to be something she would enjoy.
Our first dive together was at Cozumel (Tormentos). On the way out we were both sitting in the bow of the boat, and when we were in about 40' of water over sand we looked over the side of the boat and could clearly see the shadow of the boat on the bottom. I knew then and there that this was going to be very different from a Lake Travis dive. It was the start of an incredible set of experiences. Our next Coz trip will be in April.
That was in... I dunno, 1995 or so. Since then we have dived Cozumel at least once a year and gone to Monterrey Bay and Kauai, though Cozumel remains our favorite. When our daughter got old enough we got her certed and she dove with us until she grew up and got a life of her own.
I hope things go as well for you as they did for me.
