On the insect repellent issue, much of the need is based on eating out. In the outdoors by day, steady breezes help you tolerate the eat, and presumably keep the bugs off more or less. But a number of restaurants have their eating section outdoors, in town, where walls block wind, and it's evening. Some people even wear long pants to reduce their vulnerability.Richard.
Right and even the restaurants with an indoor area have windows open in the kitchen letting the bloodthirsty buggers in. Your legs are under the table and they just go to town. They carry Dengue, not something I feel like risking, forget about permanent scarring. During the day it's not bad and at the condo we leave the door and sliders open during the day to take in the fresh air. Creates a natural wind tunnel and they blow through. Come late afternoon, winds die off, we shut the doors up. When we sleep we roll a towel up and put it across the bottom of door. Oh yeah - we also pack 2 oversized fly swatters. Did I mention the motto on our family crest "If it flies, it dies"?
Yes - do bring cash, lots of it; Paul Humman Reef Fish book a must; Papiementu - English dictionary (I try). Leave home - jewelry (except for dive watch); high heels (rookie mistake I made first time); dress clothes. Some places (Buddy Dive for one) don't not have alarm clocks or blow dryers. Another if you can't live without it, pack it. I throw in a battery powered mini alarm clock, as I like to see time when I wake up, but cell phone also works.
