Although I have yet the opportunity to take the HC9 down for some dives, initial reviews and according to work at CES is that the HC7 is definitely a better buy. The LUX rating is a 5 compared to the HC7 which was a 2! Why Sony did this, we have no idea.

Ya that's what I heard. Doesn't make much sense to go forward by taking steps back. Wonder how much of a difference it makes in the water.

I noticed the same, although based on my results so far, it is hard to believe the HC-7 is really 2 lux.

Some of the new Sonys were only 2 lux when you enable their weird variable/slow-shutter feature, which I think probably sux for any real video you want to take. The "real" lux values were higher.

Realistically for an HD camera with a similar-sized sensor as a DV camera, the low-light behavior is very likely worse due to smaller pixels on the sensor (barring any kind of revolutionary sensor technology).

You are correct. If you read the Sony specs the "lux rating" that they are giving their cameras is based off of the slow shutter feature, not real life shooting scenarios. Marketing!!! Who reads the fine print

Ya it's basically like the car companies do. They get the mpg from the best possible scenario they can find. They do what they have to to make their product look better.

Exactly. Im heading out to Catalina for the weekend mid-march (if all goes as planned...i have the worst luck with conditions in march). My plan is to shoot footage with the HC7 and HC9 under similar conditions to see if there is any noticeable difference.

Has anyone on here shot the HC9 yet? Anyone order the camera yet?

Mike, Will be interested in what you find shooting the two camcorders.
