Dive instructor saves tangled turtle from fishing line

Joaquin Puig of Don Foster’s Dive Cayman was diving with guests off Seven Mile Beach when he spotted the hawksbill turtle tangled in fishing line and unable to move.

As an air breathing animal this turtle would have surely drown if not for the intervention of the dive instructor. Nice save.

Thank you for saving one of my beloved turtles, Mr. Puig! And thank you, Drew, for sharing the good word. My husband and I fill our BC pockets with any garbage we find while diving and, unfortunately, had very full pockets when diving off SMB.

“Plastic bags, fishing line, all this is stuff we just say ‘eh it doesn’t matter, the sea is very big’,” said Mr. Puig.

We were so very saddened by how littered the east shore of Bonaire was last year. I've never seen anything like it. Trash has to go somewhere; please put it in the bin!
