One of the big price differences is related to the thickness of the suit. What kind of diving are you expecting to be doing? What thickness of suit are you looking for?

I agree that you should not have to pay anything close to $400 for most suits.

I couldn't find a single wetsuit which fit me well. I went to my LDS and asked to see "lightly used" wetsuits from their rentals section. I found a pair of Farmer John's which fit well, and a top from a different manufacturer which worked. I asked for their best price, we haggled, and I walked away with a combo which fit like a custom suit for a fraction of the price.

I also think that having a mis-matched top and bottom makes you look like less of a newbie.

Later, when I went to a drysuit for very cold water, I got a custom-made DUI TLS 350 Signature Series.

Well I went to the LDC where I am taking my classes and got fitted. Everyone was correct, 3 different brands 3 differnet fits. The Scubapro fit the best and it ended up being a large. The extra large was just a little to big in the length of the arms and legs and I had gaps in my armpits that were pretty good size. I would have been sending suits back for a month if I had tried this over the internet. Well if anyone else new to this, and has a question on size I would have to agree with the experienced divers and say that a suit is one thing that is better tried on in person. Thx for all of the advice and help.
