Let me start by saying, I'm killing time right now so that I can meet up with my instructor for my check out dives. That's how much of a newbie I am. Knowing that, I have a question. I know its bad form, and I have seen in other threads that peeing in your wetsuit is oh so wrong. But this question has been haunting me. (I have no real life, I have to ponder this.) If you are at depth, and a couple hundred feet from the boat or exit point, and the urge hits you, what options do you have? What should you do?

I am serious with this question, not just trying to get people worked up.

Thanks

my hubby always tells his students... "there are 2 types of divers, those that admit they pee in their suits... and those that lie about it"!

There is no truer statement. :)

Hope you do great!

No. You peeing in my wetsuit is oh so wrong. Nothing wrong with peeing in your own though. Why do you think they call fresh water entering the suit, "flushing"? ;)

Joe

There is nothing wrong with peeing in your wetsuit, however, you must wait until you're in the water. Just give a few tugs to your neck seal to flush water through the suit.

It is bad form to pee in rental suits.

Go for it! (no pun intended) :D

Then rinse your wetsuit out after the dive, turn it inside out, and hang it outside to dry thoroughly before packing it away. No worries.

You should be drinking huge amounts of water in this sport anyway. Over-hydration is way preferable to under-hydration. Its gonna happen, just deal with it.

[Of course, edit added from a female in another thread, there can be drawbacks if you don't flush afterwards...so Do It Right! :) : "Pet peeve #2 would be those who pee in their wetsuits, and then want to stand right next to you after the dive and have a conversation. To all who are guilty, please know that WE CAN SMELL YOU, even though you can't smell yourself. It's much worse than farting, which most people would avoid subjecting you to. I never know what to do in this situation, short of fainting. Any suggestions?"]

It's far easier to pee in a shorty. I use the 2 leg flush method. I've had several divers ask me after a dive what I was doing and when I tell them they say " You pee in your wetsuit too?"

Just do it as needed. If you're well hydrated (as you should be) it won't be that strong to begin with. If it's at the end of the dive, like as soon as you stand vertical then linger in the water to let it disperse. Done it plenty and never even noticed a whiff topside. I find that need to go very distracting and just pause for a moment to let nature take it's course.

Be sure to rinse you suit (as always) with the rest of your gear. From my experience I'm more likely to get a funky smelling suit from water organisms left behind than from my urine. Another dive in another dive on another day usually clears it.

Pete

PS, I hope the dives went great!

You might want to stay away from the asparagus. :D
