Adiver resident in Pavia, Giovanni Sclavi, 43 years old, died on Sunday morning during a dive in the sea in Arenzano, in the province of Genoa. The man was engaged together with other divers in the exploration of the wreck of the Haven oil tanker. His diving companions raised the alarm.
To try to save him, rescue workers and men from the Port Authority intervened, with divers from the fire brigade and a helicopter. It is not yet clear whether the cause of the tragedy was an accident linked to the exploration of the wreck but at the moment the hypothesis of illness appears to be the most credible.
Every year hundreds of divers visit the site of the ship which sank in 1991 in the waters of the Ligurian Sea, causing the death of five crew members. The investigators of the port authority have seized the equipment used by the diver and the Genoa Prosecutor's Office has opened a file : an autopsy will be arranged in the next few hours.
With Sclavi, seven people have died since 2015 off the coast of Arenzano while they were visiting the Haven.
