Tragic accident in the depths of the island of Giannutri in the province of Grosseto, a favorite place for divers together with the island of Giglio, where a 42-year-old dies during a dive.

Yesterday afternoon, Friday 21 April, a man fell ill while he was under water, and then later died. We are talking about 42-year-old Ziad Samaha , born in Lebanon and living in Rome where he worked as a consultant to the FAO.

Yesterday morning, together with two friends, also coming from Rome, he had gone to Porto Ercole and from there he embarked on a boat of a local Argentario diving to go to the island of Giannutri.

The man immersed himself in the waters of the island together with the two friends but shortly after the two diving colleagues lost sight of him. The two immediately started looking for him, and a few minutes later they found him almost lifeless and unconscious in the depths of the water.

Together, the two friends immediately grabbed him and brought him to the surface , where they boarded the diving boat trying to revive him and also giving him a heart massage. At the same time they also activated the rescue services, in fact shortly after the "Pegaso" helicopter also took off from the Misericordia hospital in Grosseto. Then with the boat they headed for Porto Ercole.

Once at the port, the diver was immediately rescued, directly on the pier dedicated to diving, by the personnel of the 118 of Pegaso and the Italian Red Cross who arrived on the spot to provide first aid.

Rescuers tried to revive him, but every attempt by the medical staff was in vain.

From an initial investigation it is probable that Ziad Samaha felt ill while he was diving, due to a gaseous embolism. The loss of consciousness then made him swallow a lot of water. The lungs, in fact, during the cardiac massage let the liquid out, a clear sign of the presence of sea water.

The body, already in the late afternoon of yesterday, was transferred to the morgue of the Orbetello hospital, where it is available to the competent authorities for legal investigations.

It is probable that the magistrate will order the autopsy examination to understand exactly what caused the diver's death.

In Rome, Ziad Samaha collaborated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as a consultant to the FAO. He was born and still living in Beirut, Lebanon, he was a scholar of the marine world, he great passion of him,
