hello, first post here, very new at this, have been searching all the posts, sea lice and other things, but went down on a very grown over rope with all types of things on it, and when all of us got out of the water had alot of burning, and itching, used lanocaine and it went away, now after a couple of weeks it has returned, seems to be the same on my hands, could it be the same, some org. living that long. any help would be appreciated. thanks, vaughn

It may help to know where this happened...??

Have you asked DAN for comment?

Vaugh is brand new to SB, and responded to me by PM. To help get assistance as fast possible, I'll put his reply here...

sorry i thought i put it in, i was in montego bay, in jamaica. any help would be great.

I am wondering if this is an extended allergic reaction to the toxins in the barnacles, or what? I've had my hands nicked on ropes like this, but never a long term reaction.

Could be an allergic reaction, bacterial infection, etc. Because we can't see you and evaluate your symptoms, I would recommend you go see your primary care physician. If you can't get into seeing him in a resonable time frame, try a local clinic. Keep us posted on what you find out. Also, are you the only one suffering from this, or were other divers affected? It may even be symptoms of DCS caused by microbubbles that have come out of solution and into your skin. You may even want to call DAN.

With marine critters there are lots of possibilities. Many of the toxins have long-term effect, and that could be what you're seeing. Many have spicules or tiny barbs/spines that can stick in your skin and cause problems for months. Topical cortisone creams are often helpful. Watch for any infection and get to a doc if you develop any.

I had the same thing happen to me in Bonaire just in April. It's a microorganism and it will eventually go away. I used all kinds of things and didn't work..well, it helped a bit. but it will go away eventually. Mine has finally gone away for good.
