In diving with internationally trained divers I have only had a few inconsistencies:
  • Apparently, in France the surface OK signal (clenched fist on top of head) means out of air/low on air as opposed to clenched fist on the chest or cut-throat.
  • air pressure, aside from bar/psi problems. I was trained to show 1 finger for every 100psi (one per bar), but this leads to counting problems, especially with new divers who are narced. Some people use OK for over 1/2 tank and fingers for less or various other methods--fingers on chest/arm for 1000s or vertical/horizontal fingers

Other than that, most signs seem rather universal, except for skill signals, but those are only on training dives with extensive briefings.

This is exactly the kind of information that is useful... would this certifying agency be CMAS?

The site Dee offered was excellent, my wife and I have used many of those signals. One not listed that we find that we use often is a finger pointing to your eyes behind your mask, which means "look at", then giving the fish, shark, lobster, eel, and ect. signal. Many times when you might show someone something it can be difficult to knowing what the other diver is looking at.

Most hand signals are standard between all the different agencies. I agree with Spectre and Cave Diver...review your signals in your pre-dive check so everyone is on the same page.

Diverlink has several lists of u/w signals that you may find helpful.

Great link, but I was hoping to print and study with Paula on the airplane. But the pages won't print.
Do you have any other sources?
Thanks

Hi -
Does anyone know if it's still possible to get the PDF file that was on the Diverlink site that Dee posted the link for in this thread? Diverlink changed their site some time ago and their link to the printable file is no longer good.

i know bsac and padi differ slightly. Padi do this odd fist on head thing which to this day i still dont understand. The out of air is slightly different.

You might find some signals here:

Signals are part of the brief dive brief which includes common signals and any custom ones you may need between each other for a special purpose on dive.

I was trained for giving air pressure in the following manner:
Palm out and fingers pointed towards the surface (one through five fingers) means 100 - 500.

Palm towards body with the right hand and fingers pointing towards the left is 600 through 1,000.

If you have 1200 psi then it looks something like:

Palm toward body, fingers pointed left - showing all five fingers = 1,000

Palm out and 2 fingers pointing to surface = 200

Where it makes real sense is when you go above 1500 psi. For lets say 1800:

Palm in towards body, fingers pointing left, all 5 fingers showing = 1000

Palm in towards body, with 3 fingers pointing left = 800

This is just two signals to convey your psi.

I've found this method reduces counting and flashing hand signals when someone is slightly narced it makes it a bit easier. Then too I'm generally near enough to my buddy to show them my spg or look at theirs.

Love the signals - especially some of the ones near the bottom of the page! ("I gotta pee", and "Let's knock it on the head and f*** off home.")

Great resource,
