The OP isn't planning on navigating a boat with it. If "land navigation" means hiking, then the OP
wants something similar to one of the Garmin eTrex models. Small, will record way points, most
can load maps. If "land navigation" means navigating a car, I'd get two: an eTrex class unit for
the boat, and something made for car nav like unto a Nuvi. Or, if you have a laptop, for the
car nav job, get Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS Locator. It comes with a little USB GPS.

Note: I've mentioned Garmin because that's what I'm most familiar with (I have three Garmins,
plus MS Streets and Trips and their GPS.
