After waiting *19 years to dive, I completed my classroom and pool time this weekend! It was so much fun, even just in the pool, that I can't wait for my open water dives in a few weeks. And I was pretty proud of myself for doing well during the mask off stuff in the pool, since I've never before been able to go underwater without plugging my nose. Really the only thing I had a little trouble with in the pool was the 30 second buoyancy thing. I made it, but then he let us keep going with it to get some extra practice and it seemed like everyone else was stuck in place like fruit in jello, where I slowly bobbed up and down like mad. I went between my tank hitting the bottom of the pool and my head breaking the surface. :shakehead: But I know that will come in time. (I hope...)

I was a little frustrated with a few of the people in my class, but I liked my instructor and had a lot of fun. I am very, very tired though, after a busy weekend and not a lot of sleep. lol So sorry if this is a bit disjointed. Now I just need to meet some local divers! Well, and do the open water dives, of course.

*I had the opportunity to get quickie-certified when I was 13 and on vacation visiting family half the country away. It was just enough to get us in the ocean and I LOVED it, but when I came back I was told that there was "no place to do that in MN/too far from the ocean" and I believed it. Once I figured it out, and get finances in place enough to be able to do it, I had pretty much forgotten everything except "don't hold your breath" and "don't come up too fast" so decided to take the full course rather than the refresher.

Cool good job!!! So you are currently taking your OW cert course now to get your C-Card? The buoyancy thing will take time. But once you get it it will be like someone turned on a light. Besides, in the shallow water of a pool it's really hard to get a good hang of things. B.

Congratulations, at least you didn't wait 40 years like I did!

Heck, you're loaded with fresh water like we are in Maine so you have lots of opportunity. Of course the Atlantic is handy to have too. :)

Buoyancy will come with time. The first critical thing is weighting. If that was not covered in depth this may be worth a read.

Yep! And the instructor did say that if you can get neutral buoyancy at all in the pool, OW will be no problem. Just something I need to work on, like any new diver.

No kidding, we are the "land of 10,000 lakes" after all. (it's really closer to 15,000!) Our instructor went over buoyancy and weighting fairly well, but I'll give that link a read also. Thanks for sharing.

Shoot, you're right there with one of the Great Lakes! You practically have an ocean as one of your state's sides.
Congrats on doing so well in the pool. Enjoy your cert and start shopping for a drysuit.
