Just to let everyone know who is shopping for a Halcyon Eclipse Wing, Divernet now has a review in there latest issue. The review is also on www.divernet.com/
I found the review to be very accurate from the knowledge I have gained from my Pioneer and dealing with the Halcyon company.

Oh-my-Gosh... I don't know whether to laugh or cry here.

These people know nothing about DIR, the system, or why the Eclipse is why it is.

Some excerpts:
-------------------
"...the only way to dump air from the wing on ascent is to raise the corrugated hose and let it out through the manual inflation valve."

"Don't expect to get anything as convenient as a toggle on the end of the lower dump's pull-cord either, even though it would have made it easier to find it to dump air..."

"If this BC had an upper dump valve, I might well have loved it. If you dive only in a drysuit and use the BC for surface buoyancy, its absence may not be a problem."

"There may be merit in having a continuous loop of webbing and only one buckle rather than a couple of pinch-clips, as with most other BCs, but I missed the convenience of conventional shoulder buckles. "
------------------------------

This man is OBVIOUSLY not qualified to be reviewing this product. Love it or hate it, Halcyon markets their gear to a specific community, and it's designed with that community in mind. And this man is clearly not a member of that community.

*shaking my head and walking away sadly.*

So he critiqued it for the rest of us. I love my muliple dumps and think the reasoning behind not having them is short sighted.

I also think that pinch clips (fastek buckles) are safer than not having them. If you HAVE to get out of that harness quickly (entrapment) they may very well be a lifesaver.

I totally agree. Boogie seems to believe in the DIR hype a little bit too much :54:

I can cut a single-piece webbing with my shears faster than I can figure out how the particular type of fastex buckle on a particular piece of gear releases.

There IS more than one design. It gets even more fun with weight integrated BCs; some are obvious with nice ripcord handles, but not all.

I had a lot of fun with this in my Rescue class, with an "unknown" victim (truly - it was a randomly-assigned buddy - just like a real rescue would be; no knowledge in advance of their gear config)

If it had been a real rescue, 5 seconds with my shears would have solved the "get out of the gear" problem. Figuring out how to release his "quick releases" took quite a bit longer than that.

And here I figured you to be smarter than that. :D So now that you are free of the entrapment, do you just tie the straps back together??? Hmnnnn... even though I have a Hogarthian set-up, I do see it's limitations.

That was a low blow and uncalled for. I'm not DIR and never claimed to be... ...but the last time I checked, Halcyon sure as heck was! Didn't they try to trademark the name?

Think on this - Halcyon makes DIR gear for DIR people.

If you were a DIR diver, you don't WANT a "toggle on the end of your pull dump." You don't use your BC only for surface buoyancy. You don't WANT fastex buckles.

My point is that the reviewer clearly doesn't understand that simple concept.

Thanks for your understanding.

oooh... this is going to get ugly.

Doesn't have to... so we all have differing opinions on what is really safe. I was just pointing out that not everyone has to take the same approach.
