Only rumors - Halcyon will supposedly come out with LED lights. They will - again supposedly - be showing them at Beneath the Sea in March.

I anyone has more concrete info I'd like the hear it :)

Hi David,

sorry, but this is really paltry. LED-technology is approx. 5 years old.

But the best i found, now this DIR compatible lamp is dimmable. :rofl3:

Only Halcyon dont use the word "dim", they speak from extension of burning time :shakehead:

For compensation, the price is higher.

EOS LED Primary Light Information
The promise of LED technology that can fully replace HID lighting just took a step forward with Halcyon’s newest EOS primary light.
The new EOS capably blends numerous desirable features with a focused light output exceeding the 10watt HID. The EOS also reduces battery consumption with an efficient array of dual intensity LEDs totaling 12 watts; a quick flip of the switch and you more than double the battery’s burn time. A machined aluminum head shields a nearly indestructible LED light array with an expected lifecycle of 20,000 hours. A set of innovative Halcyon features round out the EOS by adding a custom tie point for the Goodman handle and a specially machined rear boltsnap attachment point. The Halcyon EOS represents the dawn in a new age of underwater lighting and is a welcome addition to our line of primary lighting.

EOS LED Key Features:
• Advanced LED array provides powerful 12-watt output in a small,
attractive form factor; full power output equals 600 Lumen
• Lux rating at 1 meter is 10700 / 3 meters is 1450 / 5 meters is 530
• High quality, Aluminum light head with Type 3, Class 2 Mil-Spec
hardcoat is durable and corrosion resistant
• Aluminum light head optimizes heat dissipation while protecting
LED electronics
• High quality LEDs are rated for approximately 20,000 hours and
protected by a nearly indestructible light head
• Dual Intensity LED allows an option to double battery burn time
• Built-In thermal protection circuit auto-switches to low intensity to
protect LED array from overheating when out of the water
• EOS Goodman handle features an innovative boltsnap attachment
point
• Light head body provides a rear boltsnap attachment option
• Small, lightweight Smart charger with universal input 110-240v
• Pressure tested and depth rated to 300 ft / 90 m
• Lifetime warranty on the canister
• EOS comes standard with our indestructible Explorer canister
featuring our proprietary “dry lid” design

Product should be here within a couple of weeks.

Those LEDS seem a little outdated. Going with the 3 LED array , 3 R2s could give you ~700 Lumens in 9 watts. With the new Cree XP-G's youd get 900 Lumen in 9 watt. We'll see though.

Beam shots would be nice when you get your hands on a light. Can't help but wonder how tight a beam they managed with a 3 LED head.

It's Halcyon. They must have ensured a really tight beam otherwise they wouldn't have builit it. Unless they are marketing this more towards Rec divers?

It's Halcyon. They must have ensured a really tight beam otherwise they wouldn't have builit it. Unless they are marketing this more towards Rec divers?

I saw a prototype (same lighthead, different Goodman handle) being used last October - the beam is not very focussed (as least not at all comparable with the H 10 or 21W HID). And yes the EOS is aimed towards the recreational market and was designed as a lightweight travel light to replace the 10W HID.

Here's what Halcyon's Casey McKinlay had to say:

"The 21watt is indeed the standard for cave exploration or advanced technical dives requiring an intensely focused beam. I expect it will continue to be the standard for some time. We've evaluated claims of LED equivalents to the 21watt but quite frankly they are exagerated. I expect a 21watt LED equivalent will be possible some day but it must balance output, focusability, heat management and power consumption. In addition, one of the key advantages to LED is robustness and being able to shield the LED array in a strong, protective housing. Taking an LED and putting it inside a glass testtube has never made much sense to me. We took our time (some would say too long) to develop a balanced design that blends many of the popular design features of the Explorer with LED to produce a recreational/travel/teaching light to replace aging 10watt HID technology. Surprisingly we've received a number of requests from traveling instructors that want a solid design for teaching so they can leave the 21watt at home. Halcyon is not promoting this as a technical, exploration light. Last, we are working on some educational information about LED and how to evaluate and compare this new technology. One of the key issues being Lumen vs Lux. Lumen, or volume, to me has less relevance in underwater lighting outside of maybe video lighting. Lux at various distances should be the primary metric and that is why Halcyon chose 1m, 3m and 5m with 3m being the average distance to signal a dive buddy. Why there is so much emphasis on Lumen and why there is very little if any Lux at distance ratings by other manufacturers is curious to say the least. I expect divers will appreciate the balanced design of the EOS for recreational diving in addition to the worldwide support and service. Once the educational information is available on the Halcyon site we will post the link..."
