Can anyone comment on the spine depth of a Halcyon SS backplate, particularly the small size, if that might be different from the standard size? Do they run deep? Or are the plates on the flatter side, along the lines of DSS plates?

can't give you an exact measurement, since I don't have it mine front of me, however, I think it is about one inch or so. Basically, just deep enough that the wing nuts don't stick into your back.

Plate shape has almost no effect on the relative position of the band bolts to the diver's back. Bolt length does, but plate shape does not.

Consider any set of doubles. Regardless of the profile of the back plate the tanks themselves will be offset from the divers back by the thickness of the plate and the wing. A plate with a deeper center channel will have more of the bolts projecting through than a flatter plate, but using a flatter plate *won't* position the tanks and bolts any closer to the diver.

Bolt clearance is largely a none issue anyway because the shape of the human back. Back up to a wall. Now try to get your spine to touch the wall at the points where the tank bolts would be.

H plate is NOT on the as flate as DSS or DiveRite. It is definitely on the deep side. Not as deep as HOG plate, but close. I have a detail measurement on another thread. Let me try to find it.

look at here:
http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/bu...een-dr-standard-size-plate-h-small-plate.html

At the bottom, the channel is about 1.75" deep. DR standard size is 1.25", much flatter.

My Deep Sea Supply plates are flatter than the halcyon plate I have.
For doubles, I can use a heavier/thicker v-weight with the DSS plate.

For singles, the degree of bend will determine the distance from you back the tanks is.

With my two twin MP72 rigs, a plate with a deep spine, with the wing grommets behind it (I remove the harness grommet), will meet the nuts on the band bolts "before" the plate flanges meet the tanks. Not a problem with your plates, as they run flat. But I have a small SS DSS plate and really think it's too short for me. I want to switch to a plate about an inch longer, so to one of your medium plates. Might you cut me a deal on one of your medium SS plates if I return to you an unused small Kydex plate? :D

not really trying to argue with you, especially since I have not put much thought into why there is a center channel, or bp shape for that matter, but backing up to a wall and moving my shoulders slightly forward, I can easily make my spine touch the wall.

I also dive a single tank, so I think the shape of the backplate is directly related to the relative position of the bolt ends to my back.

Maybe in the middle of your back, but not at the top and bottom, where the bolt holes are.

I can make my spine touch the wall, too. Definitely where the bolt holes are. I will say that I rarely touch or feel the bolts from my doubles, but occasionally they'll touch a little. The drysuit undies absorb most of that. To say that it can't isn't really accurate.

Body type might have a factor in this.

I use speed nuts and I can feel them, especially the bottom one, even through thick drysuit underwear. But it's not a problem.
