Could someone post photos or drawings of this harness config? Does it need a special backplate? I would like to know more details.

Thanks!

It does not require a special plate. When I make one it is simply two pieces of webbing instead of one. Waist strap is one and shoulders are the second. Rather than come down under the arms to the back and bottom of the backplate the shoulder straps come down more towards or right straight down the front. They are laced through plates that are positioned on the waist strap. Some will also use a chest strap. I make mine out of bungee cord and a bolt snap. To facilitate that I have custom tri-glides I make and the design for them is used on the new HOG comfort harness.

I just installed a Dive Rite 'Trans-Plate' harness on one of my back plates. It would seem that this is not a new idea, however the DR version has an angle so the shoulder strap does not have to be at a perpendicular angle to the waist strap.

yes, it appears to be a hybrid version of the transplate harness. Keep in mind, the transplate harness was intended to mimic a hiking backpack which transferred load to the hips when walking your gear (not diving it). The h-harness brings the harness straight down, with no load "vertical" transfer because it is for horizontal body orientation (diving, not walking). I had asked Jim and other divers who use it to comment on the stability, and those who responded say it has remained very stable. I am going to be implementing one soon... I do like a chest strap (when not using a DS as it is a valve clearance issue), and use one on my wet suit configurations.

YMMV

well, playing around a bit, I sourced some pieces, and put together my own version of an H-harness. I really like the fit. In donning it, the chest strap is buckled first, then as a twist, I set the crotch strap which is a Zeagle Split Strap Saddle, and then buckle the waist strap which locks the whole thing solid. It sits wonderfully, easy to get in and out of, and gives me nice mobility. The waist connector plates also have a d-ring integral to the bottom (DSS Counter Lung plates), so I have a clip point that was eliminated by the split saddle, and also let me remove the waist d-ring. This will be a nice recreational rig..... Hope to get a few pool dives on it over the next few months to tweak it. It gets to splash in April in Key Largo. Can't wait!

You can also just use a triglide and loop the shoulder straps back on themselves and put a sex bolt through that loop and the waist strap. Bit more permanent, but it works. I'm a much bigger fan of the Dive Rite Transpac/plate style plates than a pure H harness. I don't find the T pieces to make a comfortable harness for me and it's one of the bigger beefs with my Katana. I think Edd does it largely for more convenient storage location vs. comfort.

@NetDoc I know you can weld, you can also weld a pair of triglides together to get what you want

Maybe @cool_hardware52 could add that to the list of bada$$ hardware he has on his website

I can, but that's a job for a TIG. Stick welding that kind of stuff just looks horrible. Not sure when I'll buy a TIG and it won't be just to make some hardware for a harness. :D :D :D I'm sure you can buy what you need from Edd.

I have a design I've been contemplating. Send a sketch of what you are describing.

Just ordered mine from Deco, they sure ain't cheap with shipping. But, if the comfort is what everyone says it is, it will be well worth it..
