Has anyone every been diving in Gulf Shores? I'm going on vacation there at the end of next month and was hoping to do a few dives while I'm there. I haven't really heard much about the location. Is it worth diving there or is it just so-so?

Do you know if there are shore dives or boat dives? I'm pretty new to diving so I'm not sure how exactly it works. The only dive I've ever been on was on a cruise so you do a scheduled excursion, but how would it work normally?

Thanks!
Laura

There are shore dives and boat dives available. The boat diving will be out of Orange Beach(next door). Shore dives include a few shipwrecks just 100 yards off the beaches, visibility averages 10-15', but is often less than that, and can be much better as well. There's a jetty to dive in Orange Beach, best dove during a high slack tide.

Down Under Dive Shop is located on Hwy59(main drag to the beach) and can point you in the right direction easily.

There's nothing cheaper than a shore dive, but I wouldn't recommend the ones around here to a new diver unless they went with a guide, buddy or divemaster. Your best bet may be a charter. I'd tell the Captain/Divemaster about your training and experience (they'll ask anyway) while booking the trip, so they can try to start you off easy.
