The Russians, supposedly, have done this twice, but both times on land.

The Russians have used this method 5 times in the past, dating back to the late 1960's. Not all were on land and the last time they tried it they failed to stop the leak. Speculation on why it didnt work the last time led to the conclusion that the survey of the bedrock at the det site was insufficient and they didnt dig the hole deep enough.

You dont have to put it into the well hole, you can drill another of a larger size nearby.

I have been following this for a few weeks and this is very serious. A few things based on my readings from various sources:

The blow out preventer failed. More government would not have stopped this tragedy. It failed without legislation, it would have failed with legislation. It just failed.

The best chance to stop it was with the first top kill. There are very ominous reasons why it failed. Not good, not good.

I have been watching the BP ROV feed site almost everyday

Reality Check - BP Video Portal (Enhanced)

The only thing James Cameron could have done was to get HD cameras there. Period. The fact that he was ticked might have been his honest desire to help or publicity.

The next chance of stopping this the side wells and to try the top kill with them. Pray this works, but this is incredibly difficult, too.

From what I read, there is discussion about nuking it. The nuke is not the WWII city destroying kind, but the neutron ray kind. The neutron ray nuke is to kill all the people, but limit damage to structures and cities. The idea is the heat will melt the rock like glass near the source to seal the hole. This is very risky. The Russians, supposedly, have done this twice, but both times on land.

Finally, this is all from a 21 inch hole. That is the wellhead size, at least what I have read.

There were mistakes made by BP. While the BOP failed to close there were other mistakes made causing the blowout.

The casing at total depth is actually 7" OD.

here is a link that may provide you with more information. It is an interesting read and quite informative.

Transocean Deepwater Horizon Explosion

The relief wells are not like the top kill. The top kill tries to overcome the pressure from the well. The relief well kill will kill the well from the bottom of the hole. Entirely different procedure. Relief wells, while difficult to drill, have been done successfully before.

Here is a video that explains the process and the difference between a top kill and how it is done with the relief wells.

I post this information not because I am not as pissed as everybody else about what has and is happening but because there is a lot of bogus information out there. I know you may not believe the information from the links I have posted. I have worked in the oil industry for over 30 years and find this information credible.

I really hesitated on whether to post this or not, but decided all sides be aired and people can make up their own minds.

Richard Hoagland was on Coast to Coast AM last night. I did not listen to the show, so all I have is what is posted on their website:

Gulf Disaster/Psychic Mediums - Shows - Coast to Coast AM

In the first half of the program, George Noory was joined by Richard C. Hoagland for a discussion on the potential catastrophic dangers that could result from the accumulation of methane in the Gulf. He pointed to evidence which suggests that a massive bulge of methane is forming beneath the ocean floor. Should it suddenly burst, Hoagland warned, the methane would reduce the buoyancy of the water, causing large ships in the area to "sink like a rock," killing thousands of people instantly. Subsequently, the collapse of the bulge would cause water to fill the hole and create a tsunami that would hit anyone within a mile or two of the Gulf within minutes. In light of this theory, he posited that the lack of action coming from Washington is because they know of this potential danger and are trying to protect people by not filling the Gulf with boats as part of a clean-up effort.

Unfortunately, Hoagland lamented, since BP's mud log data is proprietary and unavailable to independent scientists, there is no way of predicting when such an event may occur. Therefore, he urged C2C listeners to contact Louisiana resident and prominent TV pundit James Carville, in the hopes of creating momentum in the mainstream media for this information to be made public. Beyond that, Hoagland's advice for people in the area was simply "get out of the Gulf region of Mexico because the Feds are not telling you the real danger." For those residents unable or unwilling to leave the region, he advised that the methane in the air carries a "huge cocktail of bizarre gases" that could prove deadly, immediately or over time, if inhaled. As such, he suggested that people in the area acquire gas masks to breathe and an ozone generator to purify the air, "otherwise, you gotta move, you gotta leave, you can't keep breathing this air."

My opinions:

When it comes to the media, things are never as bad as reported, they are never as good, but they are never as bad.

This sounds like a Y2K, 2012 doomsday scenario.

Mr. Hoagland sounds like he is an intelligent man, a scientist, used to be a CBS science consultant, and I do respect his opinion. However, in reading his The Enterprise Mission posts and listening to him on podcasts and other shows, it seems to me that he sensationalizes many events and things. To be respectful, I will chalk this up to his way of goading people, scientists, and the government to spend money, explore further, and prove him wrong.

In looking at his website and books, he describes these fantastic archeological sites and ancient advanced technology right there in NASA photographs, which frankly, I don't see.

Lastly, I have heard alot of good interesting and informative shows on Coast to Coast AM. Also, I have heard alot of adults telling ghost stories in the middle of the night.

Just my opinion. This Gulf Disaster is serious, regardless.

marshallkarp, while I don't know about Hoagland, the possibility of a Methane "explosion" is apparently not hype. The inevitability of it probably is, but it is a possibility that has been mentioned by several experts lately. I heard an interview with someone (can't remember his name) that works for the government basically espousing the same scenario. The person I heard on NPR didn't sound quite so "chicken-little" about it but did say essentially the same thing. Paraphrased - we don't know the likelihood because BP has all the mud log data and aren't sharing it, but these methane build ups are precisely what oil companies use to make determination as to whether the well viable for drilling in the first place (for these types of wells).

I posted that link in post #32 too. Really a great explaination of the procedure. Also the other link I posted has some information that may help explain some of the things that happened and gives a little more detail in the wellbore configuration and design. I have worked in the oil Industry for over 30 years. I have worked as a roughneck, a mud logger and a mud engineer, limited offshore experience and only on a platform not a semisubmersible like the Deepwater horizon. I think I have a pretty good grasp of what is going on but I don't believe 100% of anything I read or hear but if you research both sides it is possible to sort out what seems reliable and what doesn't.

Marshallkarp,

I suppose one should look at all the information possible. I mean, even the National Enquirer gets it right once in a while. Look at the John Edwards and the more recent Al Gore stories. I really never give the Enquirer much creedence but then?????????????

Oops, sorry!

:dork2:

No problem, my posts sometime get kind of long winded and it would be easy to miss it. Great link though for explaining what they are [-]attempting[/-] going to accomplish.:D
