Don't think you'll make it far offshore---these days.......Feds will jump you, I think...

Third, here's my question(s). I know the oil is creating havoc with dive charters, but can you dive in this stuff or is there anything to see? I know there are a few deep wrecks (the Big O comes to mind) - is that going to be affected? Will the oil in the water harm SCUBA gear?

My LDS had a trip to the "Big 'O'" scheduled for last weekend. The dive operator called the day before they were to dive and told them that BP had closed the site to diving. Sounded fishy that BP would have the authority, but the trip was cancelled none the less.

At least one diver from the group had already arrived in Pensacola. The LDS owner, who also intended to go, said the woman he spoke with at the hotel cried when he cancelled 7 rooms.

Just in case you are interested in the area that is currently showing the impact of the oil, we've posted a link to a gis map that gets updated daily. Be sure to check out the features of the map if you are interested. The loop takes you day by day from the disaster's start. Then there's a zoom feature that allows you to look closer at the beach areas and of course, you can pan along the coastline.
You can view the link at our site.
This does not help you get your gear clean, but should help you to avoid having to dive in oiled areas if you want.

I have read that there is enough oil in that chamber to leak for 45 years at the current rate.. Also read that a relief well is not guaranteed to work and could also worsen the situation

Ya'll need some erl on the left coast, we'll give you some-------cheap too....

Didn't you guys see the link someone else posted on here? I can't find it now, but it was a website and a few youtube videos of coverage Associated Press did on a guy diving in the gulf oil mess. Then it talked about how it took him 30min of cleaning off with dish soap before the capt. would let him back on the boat. I'll pass...

I've read a report that it's currently a race against time to get the relief well done, or the whole thing could collapse and release as much per week as the total it has already released... or more.

Before anyone declares this the end of the world please google "Ixtoc 1", it might be quite enlightening.

I hate to tell you this but Ixtoc was rather small compared to this ongoing disaster and while the world will not end many things we once did in the Gulf will for sometime to come.
