Gee, that's terrible you guys...

uhhhh...the small monitor or the oil spill? pakmike...it's rofl2 :D

while the authorities should be rushing to contain and control the spill, the local government is busy looking for someone to blame :shakehead

It looks like we've been tricked by those great PR team of Petron that we've already forgotten about what's happening in Guimaras and the mess that they've done.

The oil is still there and still destroying a huge part area of the waters around Negros.

I just received an email from BCD (a fellow PPDer) and I think it's worth posting and sharing with you guys.

Here it is:

Folks,

As you know i've been adamant about the recent oil spill caused by
Petron and their ill-equipped service providers. But honestly,
things have been hectic that I haven't been in step with the goings-
on.

It's great that Bats recently sent an email (thanks Bats) just to
keep us all back in the loop about this crisis - and my call is THAT
WE PARTICIPATE! !!

A recent oil spill also happened in Anilao - when is it going to end
and where?

My suggestion is we take part in steps to help Guimaras and also
help in any way we can for these "oil-rich" companies to improve
their practices. We were just considered "Center of the Center" in
biodiversity by Smithsonian professors no less, and we will fall
victims to the irresponsibilities of the "oil-rich" few.

Allow me to post Bats message at the end of this post and suggest a
few things:

1. Let's do our own fund-raising and donate extra goods - we don't
need to spend a lot, we just need to share our extra things.
2. Let's organize ourselves and plan out some small steps to reach
what I would suggest as 2 key objectives of our "project":
a. help rehabilitate Guimaras and assist the townfolk to stand up
again
b. help educate and influence the public to in turn influence the
oil companies to improve their practices

Let me know who is interested by this week (till Wednesday; thru PM,
text, email) and maybe we can set-up a meeting/get together/drinks
on Friday (maybe from 7-10pm) just to get the ball rolling.

Let's us all be divers-in-action.

Bobby

this. Please pass on!

Dive monsters,

Please forward to the scubaboard, etc. etc.

Thanks,
Bats

Dear Friends and Family,

I'll be going to Guimaras next week, to help distribute relief goods,
assist in a med-mission and do some social investigation of how the
resource-poor communities there conitnue to suffer becasue of the
oil-spill of two months back.

News of this hardly ever gets printed anymore these days (thanks to
the great work of Petron's PR Agency) but our contacts in the Visayas
and environment experts continue to say the damage done to lives and
nature will take years to rehabilitate.

Should you wish to donate goods or cash for the people of Guimaras,
please feel free to course them through me (or through the other
mechanisms I've pasted below.)

God bless!

Mark
p.s. To my diver-friends, do let me know if you have contacts in
Guimaras whom I can do a dive with ...I'd like to see the damage done
to coral cover myself, if possible.

ADMU Disaster Response and Management (DREAM) Team

TASK FORCE NOAH
for victims of Typhoon Milenyo and Guimaras Oil Spill

GUIMARAS Facts
============ ==

• Last August 11, 2006, Solar I tanker chartered by Petron to
transport 2 million liters of oil sank somewhere in Guimaras
Straight.

• The worst oil spill in the country's history damaged:

o 220 kilometers of shoreline
o more than 1000 hectares of mangroves in the area, and
damaging seaweed plantations, coral reefs, marine reserves and rich
fishing grounds. The area is known to be home to the dugong and
Philippine turtles.
o life and livelihood of over 10,000 people in the island
causing the following sickness:
 respiratory diseases
 dermatitis
 vomiting, dizziness and headache

• Leak continues and it will take years to rehabilitate
Guimaras.

Given these, SLB and ADMU Dream Team will conduct relief and clean-
up operations, medical mission in partnership with volunteer
medical staff from St. Luke's, futher social investigations and
advocacies with environmentalists.

Primary targets are heavily affected barangays and areas not
normally reached by relief operations.

Financial assistance is highly encouraged to facilitate purchase of
relief goods from Iloilo. Some funds will also aid the other
programs.

MILENYO VICTIMS
============ ===

Partner communities of the ADMU Office for Social Concern and
Involvement (OSCI) are currently flooded. Some houses were wrecked
and livelihood has become nil for several families. People are
appealing for help in the form of rice, canned goods, noodles and
medicines.

We already advanced badly needed food to Barangays Malaban and
Caingin in cooperation with Kapisanan ng mga Maliliit na Mangingisda
ng Cavite, Laguna at Rizal (CALARIZ).
