It may be a useful skill to learn to handle the cord of a corded (canister) light and to otherwise become comfortable with a canister light. Even if one owns a cordless light, one may find themselves in the position of needing to borrow a light, and the only light available to borrow may be a canister. I have heard this argument from an instructor, though it was now a few years ago. Perhaps enough people are using cordless lights now that a diver who needs to borrow a light will almost certainly find a cordless light to borrow.
The bottom line is, of course, ask the instructor.
