I'm a Fish!
I am seriously considering tech diving and I plan to do fundies next year. My question is, I don't know how to choose between GUE/DSAT/TDI after doing fundies. Can anyone of you vets give me the low down on the pros & cons between all these organisations? Much appreciated, thanks

Choose an instructor. Do so by asking around among the tech divers whom you know and respect for their skills and attitude, and then speaking with the instructor you intend to pick regarding your current abilities and aspirations and how they match with his teaching methods and schedule.

Whatever agency the instructor has elected to buy his card from is what agency name will be on the card you buy. This is inconsequential. It is just a card to show that you have received the necessary training for that level of diving. What is consequential is that you pick a good instructor, learn what he has to teach and observe how he dives and plans, and then put into practice what you have learned and keep your skills sharp.

Take your Fundies class and look at the kind of instruction you get. Make your decision afterwards.

I got excellent instruction from an IANTD instructor after my fundies class. However, I'm told that it's usually a crap shoot. The problem with choosing an instructor is that you don't know what you don't know.

I have heard of all different kinds of instructors - great to horrible - from the various tech agencies.

Except GUE. Never heard of a bad one yet.

That should tell you something. :eyebrow:

Roger that. And to the new unknowing tech student, the sound of redundant bladders and reels with brakes sound like good ideas.

You might find some 'recommended instructors' in your area....and INTERVIEW them! Take your time,, no reason to rush. Sometimes the instructor you finedly decide on may req. some travel. Tech is an investment of cost/time/attitude....plus alot of work and fun. Do your homework first and set your priorities in what you want and how best to get there. Good luck!! :D

Thanks for all the really good informative replies. Well I have 2 instructors in mind. one's GUE, the other is TDI and DSAT. I think both are a WEALTH of knowledge. So i'm kinda back to square 1. i'll do my GUE first and see where that leads me

Your additional choices are NAUI Tech and IANTD.

If you lived in Florida, then Chickdiver could teach you. What an opportunity!

As was said, evaluate available local instructors.

If your possible GUE instructor is Gideon Liew, he has a superb reputation. I watched him teaching a tech class here in Seattle while I was doing Fundies, and he seemed patient and very thorough.

Yea, that's what I was thinking when he said he had one... Gideon. I've never seen him teach but I dive with a Gideon-trained diver and he is pretty good at it :)

Never heard a bad thing about Gideon, only good stuff. He's a member of the training councel too I believe.
