Cult by one definition is: excessive admiration of a person or thing. Excessive is a rather subjective term which when used in this thread the way you did, will find a wide range of opinions.

Certain zealots, within any religon, twisting words to push their own agendas,

Just like any other group, certain proponents of the DIR philosophy can be fanatical but why would it be any different than any other group, passionately following what they believe in.

Absolutely correct. Zealotry exists in every facet of life, and given the relative anonimity of the web, raises it's ugly head fairly often. I just can't understand how the mundane can inflame such passion in people. The flame wars I've seen erupt over computers, operating systems, dive equipment and technique, even the type of car someone drives leave me scratching my head.

I can see Lawman's side as well though. Sometimes poking a little fun at the self important can be entertaining.

Lawman,

I too like a play of words.

"And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow; a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing."
