I'm a Fish!
Ok, i am starting a thread but i don't want people yelling, we are smart, we can talk and listen, so please no aggressive talk.

So i read a lot about GUE and DIR and agreed on most of the thing, i was planning to prepare for DIR-F (by the way i am AOW).
I just watched the GUE DIR 2004 DVD and i am now asking myself if DIR is for me...

First, no comparison with the PADI DVDs, but well diving should be serious so i was please to not hear every 2 minutes "diving is fun" :D

But well, the DVD, and mostly the section emergency procedures and gavin scooter, shown me that i am not agreeing with "Mr Muscle".
I am trying to remember the words used...
"in the first place we don't dive with St...kes"
"and those side mounters"

So i am asking if THAT is DIR or (and i hope) that some people are more open minded...
What are your thoughts about this DVD?
I am posting it there because, well, i would like to fell the DIR community before jumping in it...

thank you
and again, please, stay cool

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....We shall see where this goes.

Anyways, on just the subject of the DVD. The DVD is a snore fest. The info may be good, but you have to suffer some of the worst shot video I have ever seen. Makes bad porno's look like Hollywood productions.

The DIR-3 video (which is free and somewhere on the net), is better.

The production of the DVD is absolutely horrible, and is a disgrace to GUE and DIR in general.

W-T-F, spend $20.00 and get a kid off the street to fix it or something. 3 trillion dollars in personal gear and you can't drop a few bucks to make a decent video?

The content may be of some use to folks that don't yet know a lot about GUE/DIR, but most of it is pretty old-hat.

The entertainment value if you can get over the above, to me, is worth the viewing.

C'mon, who doesn't like coffee-talk with JJ and George?

When George starts up on a bit of a roll, I can see JJ sinking into the couch thinking, shiite, this is gonna mean another take............lol. He's just smiling away...........lol.

Yeah, it's seem low budget, it's not flowing well....

But the important question is..
are all the DIveRs like George?

I think it's generally agreed that George Irvine is, at the very least, a colorful individual, and that his persona and style of communication do not typify the DIR world in general.

GUE has a set of procedures and protocols for diving. To do a DIR dive is to remain within those parameters. Mixing teams of people using DIR equipment setups and protocols with people who are not is not DIR diving. It may or may not be grossly unsafe diving, depending on who the people are.

I think you will find that, if you make contact with the DIR community near you, the people are passionate divers with a strong desire to dive safely and well together.

You have a wonderful community of DIR divers in Southern California, and a very personable and deeply experienced GUE instructor. Base your opinions on those people. Attend one of Michael Kane's opening night lectures (they are open to anyone, and free) and see what you think. Don't throw the system out on the basis of the video.

But the important question is..
are all the DIveRs like George?

and that's what I was afraid of. So, on that note....Thread closed. Trolling

Here's why. If you can't get past George (i.e. if you can't see the forest for the trees)

Then DIR isn't for you.
