I've had close encounters of the best kind with grey whales. They are amazing.

I was diving Church Rock on the backside of Catalina about two years ago. I sensed something big in the water and assumed it was a great white, so I hunkered into a crevice and spent the dive filming there. When I surfaced, the crew of the dive boat asked if I had taken any footage of "it." I said "You saw the shark, too?" They replied "No, you had a grey whale right above you for 10-15 minutes." I never saw it.

I also used to work as a marine biologist on Lindblad Expedition eco-cruise ships that went into Magdalena Bay to see the grey whales. Here's one of my newspaper columns that I wrote about them.
