A friend up on Vancouver Island just sent this to me:

PORT ALBION,
UCLUELET, B.C.
(West side of Vancouver Island)

While the ocean vessel 'Dawn Raider' was commercial fishing for dogfish,
this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted slightly for 15
minutes before it came up alongside the boat to have a look; long enough for
one of the crew members to slip a rope around it's tail !!! 'And that's when
the s**t hit the fan!!
The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the
water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS, the boat was taking on water over
the stern and the crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump
completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the
shark finally drowned. She weighed in at 1035 LBS.
It is suspected she followed a weak El Nino current into local waters in
search of food. Although mid 60 deg. water is considered ideal for these
sharks, the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

Wow !

Last year a fisherman claimed to have spotted a great white off of Point Defiance. Maybe he really did see one! I'm not sure I want to run into a 1000+ lbs. shark cruising through our murky waters. I'm thinking my air consumption would just about go through the roof. :11ztongue

Personally,
I think it's quite sad what happened to it. Anyone know why they couldn't just leave it alone?

Because it was big and it moved all by itself..... Men are like that. Especially the ones from Ucluelet.

The last time I can remember a confirmed sighting of a Great White in BC was in 1985/86. It kept divers (well....me) out of the water for weeks.

R..

Well, I'll just continue to hope they don't come between the mainland and the island.

That's crazy though to think of great whites in our waters. I always told people the only sharks around here are 6 gills. Nothing to worry about.

Man, humans are idiots.

I hope aliens decend on those guys, lasso them with a rope, and drag them from their spacecraft until the irony sinks in.

On a side note - the photo looks suspiciously like another one that was posted recently - about a shark caught off NS?

Also note that it reads:

Massive Mako Shark Caught off Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

Rats! I've been had! It just goes to show you that you can't trust even your friends. Sorry for the mistake on my part. I'll leave this up for a few more hours so folks can read my appology and then delete the post.

Happy and safe holidays.
