Great News for those diving, or wanting to dive around the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Air fills are becoming more readily available! Many smaller dive shops in more rural communites have fallen into the past. Escanaba and Calumet lost theirs and now Marquette (home of the Marquette Underwater Preaserve) has finally lost their long time struggling dive shop and to help out in its absence the City Manager has made air fills available through the City of Marquettes Fire Department located at 418 S. Third Street, Marquette 49855 for $8.00 a fill. To call in advance is a MUST!! Ph. 906-228-0410. So make a call while while planning your trip to learn the procedure that they may accommodate you.
Negaunee, who does not have in house firemen is even trying to find a way to assist divers. City Managers Jeff Thornton (Negaunee) and Bill Vajda (Marquette) are BOTH avid divers and know how diving benefits the sport, tourism and the local economy of their communities!!
We are hoping that more Upper Peninsula communities follow their lead in areas such as Saint Ignace, Escanaba, Crystal Falls, White Fish Point and other U.P. communities that offer diving opportunities!!
Jeff, who also sits as the Marquette Underwater Preserve representative for the state, stated that he is spreading the word with all of his fellow colleges across the State of Michigan and hopes that places like the Straits, Higgins Lake and other locations may soon have local air fill supplies more readily available. And if any divers have contact with other public entities of their favorite dive destination, please feel free to have them contact Jeff and he will help educate them as to the benefits of supporting the diving sport.
