Viva Aerobus just announced that they are selling tickets for flights from Austin AUS to Cancun with service starting on 1 May, 2008. They are running a $9.99 promotional fare that makes a round trip cost $116.74 with fees and taxes. The flights will be daily leaving Austin at 8:45am and arriving at 11:00am. The return flight leaves CUN at 11:25am and arrives in Austin at 1:45pm. They will not be using travel agents and the website address is VivaAerobus - La aerolínea de bajo costo de México - Vuelos, Hoteles, Renta de autos.

Even if I drive to Austin to catch a flight that still sounds like a good deal.
Do we have to ride with the Goats and the Sheep outbound or is that just on the return flight ?
:D

( kidding )

For that price they can make you load your own luggage and flap your arms. Becky and I are booked for early May at that rate. Catch a Southwest flight to AUS and irritate a cab driver by telling him you want to go to the Viva Aerobus terminal!

Hmm so where are good places to dive there?

I just returned from this area recently and Cancun opens up all the dive operations on the Northern part of the Yucatan. You can travel by bus, shuttle or taxi and reach Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres, stay off of Cancun, hitch a ride south and catch the Ferry to Cozumel, or sign up with any of the operators doing Cenotes Cavern diving. Play del Carmen also has similar dive operations available near by. Thats to name a few of the choices. Cancun puts you close to the coast line and all those dive opportunities. Awesome diving. How can you beat the price of airfare with this kind of offer?

:D

Shawn

So long SoCal diving and hello Cozumel:D

They can't make money on those fares. Does anyone worry that they will abruptly cease operations and leave you stranded? Has anyone checked their safety record or does that not matter?

It's a promotional fare. They don't expect to make money. They are trying to promote their business and generate interest. The money comes later when they raise their rates and already have a client base and name for themselves in the area. It's all about getting our attention and word of mouth promotion. Those rates won't last long.

The airlines also subsidize their rates with deals from the hoteliers in the area. They make money somewhere, not necessarily on you but on another traveler who stays in one of the package hotels vacations they offer.
