Your best bet for a tank & weights is SC cause they're open to 9 PM on Sat.

John
Thanks John,
I called them (SC) and it felt like I was calling the phone company. I talked to 4 people and eventually reached someone who told me that they don't rent steel tanks. So the tank that Tim, the boat captian, offered in an email seems like the best option now.
It's good to know they are open until 9.
Thanks

Where are you going to be while you're down here? If you're going to be anywhere near me, I've got cylinders and weights.

they are open until 6 it might work for you. They are 5 or 6 miles from the boat. If it was any other weekend I could loan you everything you need but will be in Monteray that weekend.

FWIW

I was on the Great Escape trip this Saturday to the frontside of Catalina. We did not get back to the dock until after 6:30.

I can't swear to it yet, but I am planning on going out with the Great Escape on 31 Jan 09 too. I usually don't know until the week before because my work schedule is a bit hectic right now. But if I were to be able to make it, I can bring an extra steel tank and weights.

That would be great. I'm still waiting to hear if the captain has weights. If you do make the trip .. let's connect ahead of time.

Thanks Ann Marie, I am going to be in El Segundo near the airport, but plan on spending Fri night on the boat. Thanks for the offer! We'll see how the other things work out. I am using a steel backplate, so an alum tank isn't the end of the world, just 5 or so more lbs on my belt than what I am used to.

Thanks Cody!

If you are looking for options to Catalina or any other dive site, you can use our dive trip finder which lists upcoming boat trips and their destinations: California Diving News - Dive Trips - Directory.

You can also find search-able database of dive stores here: http://www.cadivingnews.com/divestores.html

Happy diving!

Pretty easy to find your website.. nice rankings in Google. I actually did use it to run through my options before deciding on the Great Escape. Good website. I have only one "suggestion" - the search form you have changes the text color so that you can't read stuff.. Adds a bit of confusion that isn't necessary. Other than that .. a really great site.

Thanks Rex .. How was the diving this weekend?

The diving has been outstanding the last few weeks. There is some swell building so that will probably drop the vis but normally this is the best time of year to be diving here in Socal.

Hi Frank,
you can use our scuba diving simulator to "virtually dive" in 3D various dive sites in Catalina (and elsewhere). The simulator has extremely detailed maps and a good representation of the marine life endemic of the area.

And you can see the Great Escape too :D

Frank...if you are staying in El Segundo...use Sea-d-Sea, a shop in Redondo Beach. They have steel tanks you can rent. You can pick it up on Friday evening and bring back Sunday. Talk to the owner, Barry, or his assistant Jake.

It was nice of Tim to offer his tank, but diving with an alum tank, you'll need extra weight.

Redondo Beach, is in between El Segundo and Long Beach.

Good luck, Carlos

Topside conditions could not have been better for January, 77F air temp and the flatest ocean I've ever seen. Down below the dives were all good but not great. Viz was only so so for January, maybe 30-40 feet viz, water a little green. And we saw a number of different things just didn't see anything really interesting. But it's always nice diving Catalina and on the Great Escape.

Here's a link to a few of my UW pics.

Merxlin did see an angel shark, check out his photo and his other photos (post #57). Wish I would have seen the angel shark.
