Hello all,
Just a short trip report about an awesome day at Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Montana.
After a 3.5 our drive from Great Falls, our little 3 man group arrived at Apgar Village in Glacier National Park. There were originally supposed to be 7 of us but we had 4 last minute cancels due to illness. On the drive in, we had sunshine, strong winds, overcast, rain and finally snow. In other words... PERFECT DIVING WEATHER! The Park is truly beautiful this time of year, not to mention almost empty. After Gearing up the three of us splashed, only to find out that our buddy Kim could not equalize. He did the only smart thing and thumbed the dive.
Wes and myself continued on after we were sure that Kim was safely out of the water and had a great dive exploring the "Debris Field". The story goes that a long while back they used the frozen lake as a shipping route for the local lodges. A lot of items were stored on the lake in preparation for transport when a freak Chinook wind blew in and the ice began to give. All sorts of things from hand tools to china to appliances and many other things sank to the bottom of the lake (at a shallow end) There they sit. Don't ya know, it is illegal to remove anything from a National Park.
Over the years, it seems that other divers have taken it upon themselves to "organize" the field and have grouped certain things together. We saw a "grove" of long handled shovels, a little "kitchen" with several coffee pots and dishes and even a "bathroom" complete with toilette.
The vis was great... about 30 feet. At 45 feet we hit a thermocline that got our attention and another one at 60 feet that made both of say "OH S***! out loud into our regs.
Over all a awesome day in one of the most beautiful places on earth!
Thanks for looking
My Co Pilot, Schatzie the Wonder Dog... Wondering what Bison would taste like, since that is what she is staring at.
Lake Mcdonald, elevation 3153 feet
Wes and Rosie after our second splash. Thanks Kim for taking the pic.
