Got back Sunday night from 10 days in Grand and Little Cayman. Great trip.

Grand Cayman: We were in GC last January and it is heartening to see visible signs of progress in the island's post-Ivan recovery. There is still plenty left to do (particularly on the East End from what we were told) -- probably years worth -- but the improvements were noticeable. We stayed, as always, at Cobalt Coast and dove with Divetech. Arie and Dora are perfect hosts and Nancy and her dive staff are consummate professionals. Unlike our January trip, we were able to get in a lot of North Wall diving this time, which was great. The day before we arrived, a wayward Manta was spotted off the North Wall, but we weren't graced by its presence on any of our dives. Also didn't see any eagle rays, but plenty of turtles, eels, lobsters, trigger fish, etc etc. In addition to our boat dives, we did afternoon and night shore dives at Cobalt Coast and Turtle Reef. Turtle Reef was particularly nice. We were happy to see Papagallo Restaurant had re-opened, but saddened to find that the Cracked Conch has finally been sold and that the new owners have closed it to do a complete makeover of the restaurant. I don't have a particularly good feeling about this, but I'll keep an open mind.

Little Cayman: This was our second trip (last time was 2003) to the Little Cayman Beach Resort. LCBR is first-rate. There are more rooms and divers than at Cobalt Coast, so we don't have the same cozy relationship with the dive staff we have with Divetech on GC, but they are terrific to dive with. The visibility was outstanding and the dive sites in great shape. Finally did see an eagle ray as well a few sharks (including one being "attacked" by a skipjack -- hopefully we caught it on video). One of the big positives was the resurgence in the grouper population, which was in decline two years ago. We saw many groupers (nassau, tiger, yellowfin on every dive). Even saw a Goliath grouper. As in GC, the water temp was around 86 degrees -- didn't need the 3 mil, just used a skin.

There are so many places to dive, but when it is as easy, fun as satisfying as it is diving with Cobalt Coast/Divetech and with LCBR, its tough to make myself go anywhere else!!

Out of curiosity, was that Goliath Grouper hanging out in the caves at Mixing Bowl? That was where he always seemed to be last winter/spring, but things may have changed.

Saw the Goliath grouper at Blacktip Blvd. It was at the same time that we encountered the shark being bit by the skipjack. I was trying to close in on the shark for a photo when I sensed something big right below me and looked down to see the grouper. I got a couple of fairly crappy pictures of it...never seemed to be able to get in a good position where its size would be evident.

Have heard alot about Divetech's scooter dives. Do you have any feed back on their scooter trips? Diving with them in October.

Great trip report. Can not wait to get wet.

We did the scooter dive that went from one shop to the other last summer. It was about a 70 minute dive. It was fun, though a bit like seeing America from the highway through your car window. Neat to go by areas that I think were rarely dived, saw a couple sharks. They had a boat following for anyone that ran low on air before the end. About 3 of 8 dropped out before the end; I'm a fish and was about exactly on with 500 at the stop, don't know what the others had. I think they may have had a couple extra scooters on the boat as well as they were a bit tempermental (all over the place on battery life and reliability.) The DM periodically traded scooters with people so she always had the slowest one, so people wouldn't fall too far behind and it worked pretty well.

You couldn't do this trip unless you'd used a scooter before. That was probably a good restriction. We rented them the day before, they just gave a us a few tips and pointed us to the water. We played around awhile to get used to them and did a trip out to the wall.

We've used the scooters from Divetech in the past on shore dives from Cobalt Coast as a way to get across the hardpan to the reef more quickly. They're fun, but can be a bit balky at times. And if you're doing photography, forget either the scooter or the camera. On our trip we did the scooter trip from Cobalt Coast to Turtle Reef. As another post indicated, you can't really stop to see things...you just pass them by. My scooter crapped out part way and our leader had to surface to the trailing boat to get a replacement. While he did that, the group (I think there were six of us) basically made little progress. As a result, just about everyone ran low on air before we reached our destination (we were in sight of Turtle Reef, but just couldn't get there). Some people love them, some don't -- you should check them out at least once to see what you think.

Thanks for the information on Divetech's scooter adventure. We are so excited. Also, we are thinking about trying out the Closed Circuit 1/2 day experience. Any input in this?

sadly no, we were supposed to but they messed up their scheduling and we couldn't do it. I'd like to hear about it too.
