The wind's impact will depend on the direction from which it comes and the dive op. Most ops can adjust their dive sites to minimize the impact. Many times the forecast lists the chance of rain and wind, but we've found most rain showers tend to be localized and short-lived, so don't lose sleep over it!

As for car rental, I've found the lowest price for our Jeep rental to be from Cayman Auto. Heck, we've rented from them so much they are like family. Their website is... Cayman Islands Car, Auto and Scooter Rental Company located in George Town, Grand Cayman.

They do hve Avis, Hertz, etc, also.

I appreciate the input.

I especially appreciate the recommendation to not lose sleep over it when the weather forecast looks concerning.

This being my first trip, I am trying to cover all the bases so as to ensure as great a trip as possible.

So once again, thanks for the info.

Wow what a great trip.

I can still hardly believe how great this trip to Grand Cayman went.

Definitely, the trip of my lifetime.

I cannot remember a time when I was more relaxed and also fulfilled with scuba experiences.

I did rent a car and really enjoyed driving on the "wrong" side of the road especially through all the roundabouts.

Diver's Down scuba was great in every way. Rob, Jenny, Dave and all the others were just great.

Travel and accommodations along with friendly locals made it the trip of a lifetime.

Thanks to all who provided input and helped make it so great.

I wouldn't expect currents or viz problems even on the East end....Another thing about the scooter dive, it's best to have pretty good air consumption. It's a long dive and not everyone makes it all the way. I think we took like 75 minutes and it's actually a bit further now as they moved the destination shop since then. They do have a support boat following which will pick up people as they run low on air, but nicer not to spend half the trip on the boat.

Hi Damselfish,

You recommended Cobalt Coast as a nice alternative to the more heavily dived sites and we have booked a trip with them and will dive with DiveTech.

Do you know what the viz, temps and currents will be in January? Also, we want to try the scooter dive - I was very excited about that but now it sounds intimidating. Its 75 minutes at what depth? My air consumption is okay but that is a long dive.

Do you have any recommendations for other dive sites? Your advice would really help. Thanks!

Hi Nylorac,

My son and I did the scooter dive in 2008. It was 73 minutes at an average depth of 41 feet with a fair amount of variability. With the DPV, the exertion is minimal and the air consumption is very good. The limiting factor may be the DPV battery rather than air.

Enjoy, good diving, Craig
